Where do our CPU cycles go now?

Well looks like October 1st we will no longer be able to fold for Distributed Folding. Lets see where everybody wants to go after this is over. SETI, Folding@Home, or does somebody else have a different idea

Well.... I ment to make this a poll but messed it all up

killernoodle 09-03-2004 07:30 AM

F@H is the next best thing, seti just proved to us that they are a waste of time.

pHaestus 09-03-2004 10:37 AM

I don't have any interest in participating in Seti either. Folding@Home is ok by me.

oooh good link JayDee

I like the particle accelerator design DC projects!

What about us that run Linux? I don't want to have to run the Windows client using WINE... It is up to you though, this is your site :D

mikoto 09-03-2004 12:30 PM

f@h would be a lot simpler for me to implement at work. Can't speak for the accelerator project as I haven't looked at its client yet, but f@h is something I could put 8-10 machines to work for. Accelerator project sounds cool though.

The LHC one for the hadron collidor at CERN looks interesting too.

pHaestus 09-03-2004 12:39 PM

linux client is a reasonable requirement for our next DC project I think.

KnightElite 09-03-2004 01:24 PM

Folding@Home is fine by me. We just need to make up a team and get started.

killernoodle 09-03-2004 03:05 PM

you crazy linux people, always ruining everything for everyone...

prb123 09-03-2004 05:01 PM

Anything but SETI.

Thank you :D

well back when i suggested that we do a DC project... we decided that F@H wouldnt be a good choice just because there would be no way we could be competitive.

Places like hardocp and overclockers have a huge amount of folders and we wouldnt be able to keep up with them (and by we i mean you guys because i dont fold anymore).

So... I think you shouldnt pick F@H.. even though it is the most worthwhile folding project if you are not worried about competiting.

You could also go with distributed.net

We're crazy for wanting more of our CPU cycles to be used for something useful, instead of GUI overhead?... ;)
(I'll bet you have Bonzai Buddy installed, too, don't you? j/k :p )

I don't necessarily think F@H is a bad project due to its popularity...who wants to be a big fish in a small pond, anyway? :D

Nightfall 09-06-2004 07:25 AM

So how does the UN scheme for F@H work? I installed the client and it just asks me to type in a username. You don't have to actually register it... does that mean that anybody can come along and type in Nightfall and it will start posting WU's to my 'account'?

Chew_Toy 09-06-2004 07:41 AM

Yes it does. It just requires a user name and team number. Stats are listed by userame under each team that username contributed to.

Here is a link to my stats and should show two teams since I made a typo once when I setup FAH on one of my systems.

Nightfall 09-06-2004 08:23 AM

Last 3 posts have been from Wisconsin.... were taking over these forums :evilaugh: :evilaugh: :evilaugh:

Chew_Toy 09-06-2004 08:38 AM

Doesnt hurt that the site owner is from Wisconsin.

Nightfall 09-06-2004 10:12 PM

edit: Stats pages are working okay now :D

jaydee 09-07-2004 10:00 PM

I have done F@H for amdmb and was not to exited about it. Especially being they have plenty of comps already on it. If you go that way I wish you guys good luck and happy crunching as I am not going to participate. Don't want ot discourage anyone else here intersted though as it is a good project.

I am pondering finding a good team running this: http://www.find-a-drug.org/ Whenever (if ever) I get home for more than a few days I will load it up and see how it goes.

Nightfall 09-08-2004 07:45 AM

I am not discouraged, im kind of excited to get working on a new project :D Our team consists of 4 folders though, I hope people start switching over from DF soon ;)

thezfunk 11-06-2004 05:28 PM

how about United Devices...they do cancer primarily and also small pox and anthrax.

JWFokker 11-08-2004 12:32 AM

I think we're pretty competitive as far as F@H goes. We won't see much real competition until we get near the Top 100. We'll be overtaking several teams a day for the next couple months. We'll have to start a campaign around Februrary though to get to the Top 100 and stay there if our projected points total is fairly accurate.
