What is the quietest 12vdc water pump that's available?
I need a quiet 12Vdc water pump for a AMD64/ 6800GT system I'm building in a Chenbro Genie case. 2 x 120mm BI pro II radiator. Since I'm using swiftech cpu and gpu blocks and a maze4 chipset block I don't need a lot of flow rate. I'm plumbing with 3/8" throughout. I'm shooting for a very quiet system with moderate overclocking. I want a quiet pump that's available. The CPS-750 sounds good but it seems impossible to determine the availability on it. The Liang D4's are a bit pricey but I'd settle for that if it is quiet. Can anybody recommend alternatives that fit the bill and are currently available?

Of all the ones that I've personally heard, the MCP600 is.
Have heard: Johnson CM30-P7 Johnson CO30-P5 Davies-Craig EBP Swiftech MCP600 (also available at www.cooltechnica.com badged as AquaXtreme 50Z-DC12) Swiftech MCP650 Laing D4 (effectively an unmuffled MCP650) Both the Johnson pumps are not recommended due to very lower motor MTBF due to the use of brushed motors. Will have the March 893-09 in my hand soon. |
isn't there a 12vdc version of the eheim 1048 available?

Innovatek markets this pump as the HPPS. I have one and it's very quiet. I would guess that it's under 18dB
Unfortunately it's hard to find any curves on this pump. If I were to guess, it would be 1046 flow at 1048 (or maybe slightly better) pressure. There were apparently two versions. The earlier version was a modded-to-12VDC 1046. If you have a 240VAC 1046 I think you can still get the parts to modify it to 12VDC. The later version is the one with better performance than the 1046. |
C-systems offer 8DBa (average) for its pump... Not sure what to think of that.

no pump mfgr has this kind of test equipment, so it must be done by a lab my question (retorical) is the cost of such testing - I am presuming it is a measured value and not bullshit (?) |
I think it's a guess, because they don't expect any customer to ever measure it. By all means, you shouldn't be able to hear the pump at all if it's that quiet.

Maybe what they mean is 8dba above the background noise wherever they did the test.

I think it depends on the background level in the chamber. An 8db change from say a 10db base level wouldn't be the same as an 8db change from a 60db base level. We need more info.

this is not the best info but a guy over at silentpcreview.com has a pair of them.

I have the CSP-X2 (2 x pumps), and I tested them in series in a simple loop... criticool waterplant -> csp-x2 -> heater core ... I can't tell if the pumps are running, it's very quiet. I would only know if they were working by looking at the flow of the water or by touching the pumps. I did my test by hooking them up using a 12v DC power adaptor.
BTW, since they were in series, I did redundancy testing. I turned off 1 pump just to see what happens, and it was good. Water seems to have a good flow, of course I don't have very good ways of measuring this, I just looked at the water flow inside the waterplant res. |
