Best Resevoir for this setup?
 

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, and all things water cooling. Now I have dones some reading around here, and other places in general so I know roughly what I need (going to start building soon bit by bit). I will be cooling my CPU and GPU. So far I have on my list:-

RAD: Thermochill 120.3 Rad, (not really sure whether this is a bit overkill, but for the extra £5 may aswell get this over the 120.2!)

PUMP: Eheim 1048/1250 or a D-tek AquaXtreme 50Z depending if I can be bothered to order it from America (chose these on the basis of Cathers "how much pump is enough" thread)

BLOCK: Seeing as I won't be needing a blockuntil at least January I'm hoping I might be able to get a Storm G4. Not sure on the GPU one as I haven't really looked into them.

RES: Now this is where I am properly stuffed! I have done a search on all the forums but no-one seems to say what is the best one. is there any difference in perfermance between any of them, eg the Bay Res's, dual bay etc or does it simply not matter on what I go for?

i say the more coolant the better. more coolant= longer time to heat up...

brum i have just had i nightmare to get the parts i wanted in uk and the prices are stupid so have a little linkage...

a place that actualy have waterblocks

a heater core un uk ! + free fans

other places have ither...

a. not had what thay clame to on site

or

b. try and charge 2x the proper price

Cheers for that Fletline. i have seen the first site before but not the second so I'll have a look around, so thankyou. I'm in no hurry for any of the stuff, just going to get the Rad first so I can mod my new case when I get it (Lian Li PC 70), so i think I may wait for the G4, hopefully be able to get one in Jan.

Just no-idea on the Res!

I have to say the opposite to that. 100% water IS the best coolant. Normally, coolant is added to inhibit growth in the water and it also serves as rust inhibitor, particularly if you have mixed metals in the loop. Sometime, the purpose is to add color or make the water UV reactive. But definitely, the ratio should always be more water than additives, hence the name ADDitives. The more coolant/additives you put in, the less efficient it would be taking heat out of the blocks. The rad is there to cool the water.

Are you sure he didn't mean more coolant, as in get a bigger res so you can fit more coolant (water) in it?

It's more on your preference really. I don't think there's a big difference among them. Think where you would want it to be placed, then that would give you an idea what type you need to go for. Example, if you have extra 5.25" drive bays you may want to go for bay-res type. But if you need to use that space, you may want to go for criticool waterplant (4 or 6 inch). Or if you have space constraints, why not just go for T-LINE. Personally, I went for criticool waterplant 4", its very versatile and it goes well with UV reactive water. Just a note though, if you go for bay-res, I have read a lot of people having problems, completely removing air out of their loop, I think its because how the fill-port was designed.

Americans have bastardised 'coolant' for additive.

Water is a form of coolant, obviously.

I don't have any space constraints in the the Lian Li really so don't want a t-line, and I should have a spare 5.25" bay free, and a floppy bay, and room at the bottom! AreTHESE bay res's any good? I saw them in another thread,

Drawbacks:
the system cannot be pre-tested "dry".
flushing out the system requires disconnecting a section of the circuit (unless a T and ball-valve assembly was to be added to the circuit).

If you're alright with that, then it shouldn't be a problem. Personally, I like my res to be clear so that I can easily see if there are any bubbles floating around. Also, clear res also serves as a way to show off the UV reactive water, well in my setup that is. Just sharing some insights there.
