2 variable PSUs for fan and pump needed

hello, i need these for my MCP-350 and two 24V fans from hell to put in my
W/C rad box. the pump unit needs to supply enough current plus a little
overhead for two 350 pumps. 2.5amps perhaps? the unit for the fans needs
to supply about 3.5amps at most. the combined draw from both fans is
3.4amps @ 24V. there's no way i'll run them that high though. curious,
what is the appropriate type of supply to be using, ie. PWM, LINEAR, or
SWITCHING? iv'e read PWM supplies are bad for RPM sensing fans i think. to
keep costs down, i would be thrilled if there was two different DIY fan
bus solutions that can provide the respective voltage/current needed.
because i found a 24V, 6.5A power supply(SWITCHING i think) at
allelectronics.com for cheap. then all i would need to do is build the two
different circuits for my pumps and fans i really need your help
guys/girls. links to electronics kits houses would be great. any help
would be greatly appreciated!
slicey
PS i have only the one MPC350 but want a variable PSU source that could
handle two for expansion options.

What kind of fans do you have that you would want to run them at 24 volts?
And how loud would they be at 12 volts?
Would they power up at 12Volts?

madhacker, they are papst 6.75" fans that run 12-28v and i said there's no way i'd run them that high. i don't know the SPL@12V but SPL@24v is 61dBA. ouch! don't know the answer to your last Q either-gonna find out in a week or two though.

I am using 4 Papst 6424/2H in my radbox. thread here
mine power up nicely at 8volts, not to loud but still want to throttle them down to 6 volts.

hey slicey, can u do me a fav and get me the meashurements of that pump hxwxl pls thinking about getting it even though it's weaker then it's other sibblings but if the size is right it shall do.

those are the same exact fans(2) i ordered sunday for $15.0 each at allelectronics.com. what a deal! i gather you're using a 12v fan controller? i ordered 2 LM338T variable voltage regs. to build a supply around for the fans and my pump plus a 24v psu to power the 2 var. psus. wicked fun i tell you. i saw your box when you responded to a recent post of mine, thanks!
what's stopping you from running 6 volts into them? also, maybe you can enlighten me about my pump choice because i'm starting to question it. got one MCP350 to run a POLARFLO TT for now. in a month will buy DD 6800NVIDIA gpu cooler and months later i'm going to try to W/C my antec 550W true control on my friend's company's huge mill. would really like to open the sealed box to my pump since i've never held one in my hands before. but am abstaining cause i've thought about returning it and moving up to a bad boy IWAKI, which will make one psu unessessary-oh well. any comments?

tong, the pump body is 2.4" square, 1.7" tall, and the barbs extend 1" from pump body. :dome:

I am using a 12 volt fan controller.. I bought it a couple years ago and it works well

If I start up the the fans they need about 8 volts to power up...
but after they power up I can run them at 6 volts...
If I dial them down to 6 volts and I get the power interupted then the fans won't spin up...
Even though I have them on UPS I'm still paranoid...(have kids)

As for pumps I hope this thread asnwers your questions...
How much pump is enough? How much is too much?

Hmm my comair rotron fan is similar but only 55dBA. Still way too loud at full speed.

slicey 03-15-2005 12:29 PM

butcher, are your fans the ones from allelectronics.com? just curious because i was considering those.

slicey 03-15-2005 12:48 PM

madhacker, i read that cathar article about a month ago but i don't have any previous W/C experience, thus i don't have the the kind of confidence and experience that many of these forum members do. that's why i wanted to get your thoughts or anybody elses on this matter. and i forgot to mention the heater core i've modded already. '77 bonneville w/ac. i prefer to educate myself when i'm taking on a new endeavor, which i've spent the past 3 months doing, but i feel some some encouraging comments or criticism from my members would be a helpful learning experience also. so everyone out there.....bring on those comments-good or bad!
thanks a bunch slicey

I have:
http://www.comairrotron.com/dc_family.asp?FamilyID=38
Model JQ24B4.
Got it surplus, don't know if the models on allelectronics.com are the same.
