One 50x50mm 230W TEC or two 40x40mm 172W TECs?
Wich setup do you think would perform the best:
1) one 50x50mm 220W~230W (15.2V 24A) peltier or 2) two 40x40mm 172W (24V 11A) peltiers side by side Both with copper coldplates that are 10-11mm thick and TECs operating at their optimal voltage. |
The 2 172W's clearly - 2x172W is 344W which is much more than 230W, although I didn;t know you could even buy them that big! :)

This was my thought too, but in this tread over at Tekheads.co.uk one guy states the opposite. Perhaps he left thicker and more efficient coldplates out of the equation.

well having almost an extra 50% power makes up for having more surface area, and copper coldplates are pretty damn good at heat spreading, with good insulation the two drifts should be better.

ok, thanks. I thought it sounded a bit stange but it still made me start doubting that the dual peltier design was the best one. I'll stick to the dual design.

Yes the cold plate that comes with the Dangerden Maze 2-2 isnt thick enough to focus the cold down to the core from 80x40mm peltier's
It would be better to have the single peltier, and also as Jess says the Swiftech (with 1/2 fittings) is better than the maze with one peltier. |
I don't see why, the maze2 uses 6 mm copper which is pretty damn good at heatspreading. Also the differece in surface area isn't that great, one 50mm is 25cm^2, two 40mms is 32mm^2, that's only 28% more, and yo have nearly 50% more cooling power...

Overlag, how much thick must be the cold plate to handle two 40x40mm TEC?
DD Maze2 has 6mm cold plate, if this is not enough, what do you think, 8, 10, 12, 15mm? :confused: |
I used the Maze2-2 with 2-120 watt @24v pelts, -37C to -30C isn't good enough at idle?(depending on water temp :) )

Sadly I don't remember were I saw the 230W 50x50mm peltier. It was at som peltier manufacturers site (I think it was a US company??). Later I read a thread in the forum at Tekheads.co.uk that someone is asking around if anyone is interested in buying those peltiers. Perhaps there is more info over there. I have linked to the thread in one of my posts above. (Their forum may be down at the moment) |
when i say the cold plate isnt big enough, i mean u will lose some cooling effect from the peltier
im not a copper boffin though, i have no idea :) |

Specs are nice hey! 3v to 15v 40Amp continous :). Probably wouldn't do you any good thou, as we are 240volt AC mains over here. I've got one coming very soon so I'll let you know if is has a 110 switch over (like PC PSU's).
If it were compatible, I guess it wont be light, so I don't think you'd see much change out of say $180 £200 to buy and have it shipped. There must be stuff like this is the USA, go and buy a few Ham Radio mags, as that is the market high amp, low volt Psu are usually intended for. |

Damn, I know my Powerone SPL would handle a 230 watt TEC, it will do something like 23A at 12V and about 18A at 15V, just a little tweaking to find the sweet spot. I wish I had a friend in the UK, sadly I don't believe Techeads will not ship to the US :(

Then 2 x 172W it (still) is. But it'll have to wait till sometime after I have bought a Canon D30 digital camera. :(
