don't know how much good the lapping did you, but man, that's great! 3ghz, wow! great job.

ya, the bat was out for CMOS clearing ... was having A LOT of problems lastnight...check out the "OC" link for more info (thought the CPU was dead...)

storm block bases ARE flat (B4 assembly) but after assembly, mine was not...check out the "lap G5" link for FULL story and LOTS of pics (with PM's from Cathar)

This Venice cores seem to OC very well,

HUGE difference between 3GHz Prime95TT stable, and a CPU-Z suicide shot at 2833MHz on air.

But at 2790 & 39c temps not sure what the difference w/ the 2800 temps.

I can only imagine if it's naked & on water

It'd probably reach about the same. Which would be nice to think that ~3GHz stable on good water is an achievable goal.

well, this CPU did do 2900 (Prime95TT stable) on a (lapped) XP-90c with 92mm tornado....290x10 1:1 with TCC5 mem, but @ 1.65v it was hitting 46C load temps....

Dont want to get off topic, but i have a g4 do these warp as well, mine seems to be a little.

i just checked mine (one of the first shipped out: not a stepped base)

its a little bowed (along the "long" axis) but NOTHING like the G5 in the pic (which was bowed on the "short" axis).

cant say if thats due to the base not being stepped or the copper being stronger or .... :shrug:

as Cathar has stated B4, the bases were FLAT B4 assembly, there are too many factors to take into account to "know" if the base will be flat after assembly.

Yah, there's an issue with the O-ring compression. Have since addressed it. Actually I thought that I had addressed it before, but it seems that the machinists messed up, I had to get all the O-ring channels re-machined, and then they messed that up too, giving the warping issue.

Have submitted them revised plans, with different O-rings, and specified an O-ring channel size and have told them to follow it to the letter and that I'll deal with the consequences myself of if it is wrong, rather than having them second-guess me again.

The issue is variable in nature. It would seem that Joe Camel got the worst of it, but with these new plans, it should be a thing of the past, or at least reduced to total insignificance.

Stew is Swiftech the only one that will Manufacturer the Storm or you still make & sell your own version? Will Swiftech also make G5s?

Cathar, my G5 has the same flexing that Joe has (had?). You seem to have found a workaround for future G5's and I'm wondering if any part of that solution could apply to the first batch.

I'm very, very hesitant to take my block to sandpaper. I'm not worried about my ability to get it flat in its currently assembled form. However, I am worried that if I ever had to disassemble the block in the future it would be nearly impossible to reassemble it with exactly the same pressure on each screw, necessitating another nerve-wracking silver lapjob. From there I'm off to the races with regards to true flat and perpendicularity as I compound one lapjob onto another.

If there's nothing short of a re-run that can fix it, I'll go ahead and lap it myself, but I guess I'd like to make absolutely certain I've exhausted all other options before going that route :)

Not something that is going to be easily fixed at all on existing block, sorry Styyn.

Don't worry when lapping the silver. The base-plate is fairly thick and you're not going to wear it away in a hurry.

I would suggest, first, mounting the block and deciding if you're unhappy. The warpage is still well within what thermal pastes are specified as handling. Joe Camel is just highlighting his hunt for working out the last bit.

I've checked, lapped, checked, dis/reassembled, and checked again one of the spare blocks here and once lapped when re-assembled it remains fairly true. Am unsure how much is due to the O-rings, and how much is perhaps due to subtle warpage in the middle plate due to heat from machining.

Future blocks will also feature bracing posts that hang down from the middle plate and brace the top of the base-plate to address the issue a little more completely.

Doesn't everyone lap their base and CPU (after removing the IHS) :evilaugh: w/ .6micron grit for a mirror finish (sorry this comes so naturally that I didn't take pics) Takes me about an hour, on my slat of leftover granite countertop and a flat piece of glass, 400/600/1000/2000 / .6u and the final secret - a couple a dabs of AS ceramique and so Alcohol on a tissue for the 'mirror finish' :D

but after RE assembly, i checked and was satisfied with its flatness (again)

real easy: the harder you tighten, the more it bows.
reassemble @ about the same tightness as when you lapped it and it *should* be good.

or just dont screw with it after you lapped it ;)
