Pelt and water cooling!!
OK,..I am interrested in throwing a pelt in the mix. I have a 1.33 gig athalon that I cant keep under 60c!! Talk about pissing me off.
I just purchased a Koolance water cooling rig(which seems to do worse than my old ocz gladiator copper air cooler!!). It seems to keep the ambient water temp to around 40c at the sensor of the water block on the cpu, but that isnt keeping my cpu cool at all according to the inside sensor. Something with the heat transfer i guess.... Would a pelt help this much? Could i run a pelt on one of the water blocks instead of putting it directly on the processor? hrmm Any and all advice is much appreciated... Could my trusty Asus A7A266 mb be lying to me? So many questions, so little time.. |
Your asus mobo's temp sensors sucks.
And a pelt is a very bad idea with a koolance case. Stop thinking abot it, it won't drop your temps... |

Can someone elaborate on why a pelt wouldnt work on a koolance case. Is the case just too weak to handle any more heat? I am also curious to what I would accomplish by putting a pelt on a seperate water block to cool the water b4 it goes to the cpu...Wouldnt this do better than what I have already? If so, what size of a pelt would I need? It would be cooling much lower temperature water compared to being directly on the cpu( 40-45c ). Just curious... |
Oh, and just to let you know. I was intending on using a heatsink and fan on the pelt(assuming that the pelt could be low wattage) and directly porting the heat outside of the case.
It sounds cool on paper... |
try an 80watt.
but don't expect it to work. the koolance was designed to be quiet, not cool. |

hmm, the koolance case is garbage for performance. It tops out around 90watts of heat. At that point it just chokes.

I am noticing.....But anyway, I have ordered a 72w pelt to play around with. The plan is to directly attach the cold to a large water block and put a nice heatsink and fan on the hot side( because the Koolance cant handle more heat, this seems to be the only option..). Then rigging something up to directly port the heat outside the case. Never know...
Anyone do anything similar? |
60 degrees is VERY hot.... my theory is that you don't have good contact between your cpu and heatsink/water block..... get that right and it should drop a good 15 degrees.

Sadly, thats what I thought too. After spending hours applying more pressure to the cpu, I came up with no better results. I am even using Arctic silver grease for better transmission.
I will be receiving my pelt tomorrow (finally), and will post results of testing soon! |
RESULTS!!
After applying the pelt directly on a water block (which i was using for cooling my HD), then cooling the Hot side with a heatsink and fan, I was capable of getting the ambient water temp down about 16 degrees lower(93f instead of 109f). Not bad for a helpless cause, I think...My cpu temp stays at about 58c. Now I know thats high, but when you compare it to the previous temp which was no less than 60c and always around 70c, you do the math. Any suggestions? |
Can you put another radiator in front of the pelt?

I think it might make a little difference, but Im not interrested in having a huge mess inside my case or out.

I'f i'm understanding you correctly your cooling system, from the cpu up is: mother board, cpu, water block, peltier, heatsink/fan? If thats the case I have to ask..... why not do: mobo, cpu, peltier, water block? That will cool the cpu significantly better, and if it's running that hot to begin with you shouldn't have to worry about it getting too cold (for condensation/frost). If you do that order a cold plate between the cpu and peltier would also be a good idea.

Actually, I was experimenting on having the pelt on a seperate water block(cold side on water block, hot side being taken care of by heatsink and fan).
Reason why i was experimenting with this is because my water temp is already so crappy(100-108) that I didnt want to make it worse. But, I did order a bigger waterblock/pelt mounting bracket so that I could experiment with the pelt direct on cpu. My fears: I dont believe that a 72w pelt will be enough to cool a athalon 1.33gig. And the water temp will prolly go up a huge ammount and basically defeat the purpose of water cooling the GPU, HD, and Motherboard. Oh well...Ill post results as they come. |

i use a 120 watt 24 volt pelt just on a duron 750 @ 1000 and get 27f at idle, but i have alot outside my case, 12v,10 amp/24v 20 amp home made control box. i used 1/4x2x3 cold plate that makes a nice buffer for heat and it can even "soak up" heat for a short time if the pelt gets turned off. :)
