MCW6000 cross compatability?

I see that the stepped base version of this block is not compatable with the Athlon64, but is compatible with the Socket-478 using the P4 hold down plate. What is it about the stepped base block that will not allow it to work with the Athlon64? Is it that the step base will not come in full contact with the heat spreader of the A64?
Thanks!

yup
the bp must cover the entire IHS
I required such, Swiftech may change this in the future

Ok, thanks Bill. Looks like I might resort to some unorthidox modding, or shop for a different block.

yo kbofwv, i got a 6000 that's flat and been looking for a 6000 with a step, msg me i think we can work somethign out

Oh, sorry tong, I don't have either block at the moment. I was wanting to buy a 6000 for my current socket-a system, but have it upgradeable to a soon to buy socket-939.

I've planned on using my tried and true stepped MCW6000 on a socket 939 system for a while now. It does work perfectly fine for the Athlong 64 as I understand it. The only issue is that the stepped version is thicker than the flat version so you have to modify the mounting hardware.

I hadn't thought about it not fully covering the IHS like Bill had mentioned, but I was planning on removing the IHS anyway to help compensate for the increased thickness of the block. Removing the IHS is a quick and easy mod that has the potential to net a drop of a few degrees.

bah i just realized today that I need to re-plumb everything just to change the mounting
i wanted to swap between my A64 and s478 setups

hmm maybe i can make the a64 bracket work on the s478...
