Methanol in TDX
 

How well does the plastic top of a Danger Den block handle a 10% methanol/water mix. What type of plastic is it?

I don't think any common plastics are damaged by methanol. Its a polar solvent like water, shouldn't hurt plastics.

been using a 5% meth mix with a Cascade, Maze Zchip for 2 years, no worries

Im waiting for the procooling crowd to jump on this.

I know that ABS and polyurethtane will fail if used with methanol. Nylon and polycarbonate will also be effected, but to a slighter degree. What i dont know for certain is what type of plastic DD used. ( although i know its not ABS or nylon ect, just pointing out it can hurt plastics.)

Just to note Lucite and Plexiglass are simply a brand name. Acrylic is the actual material.

Methanol and ethanol eats your brain, don't use it. It's flamable and healt dangourous.

many things are bad: beer, wine, whiskey, weed, coke (both types), fatty foods, cancer sticks, etc. so your point is?

Yeh I am not too sure what the reason for the health alert was... since this guy is using it in his cooling system not his brain. (although I use Ethanol in my brain quite a bit... )

Methanol will evaporate even at sub-0 temps and even with the best seals in the world, vapour is likely to enter the air around the cooling chamber and therefore the room where the system is being operated.

Umm
you use mouth wash? Maybe turn on the washers for your car windows? What you think the main agent in those are? Methanol. Just dont drink it. Theres FAR more dangerous things in the air than a light alcohol that diffuses rather fast.

Eh, everybody is fussing over something that's poorly described. We've been over this time and time again.

Methanol, aka methyl alcohol, in its pure form does pose some health hazzards. However, when mixed with water, the alcohol vapors do not dissipate anywhere near as fast, making it relatively safer (not 100% safe).

Windshield wiper fluid is a mix of water and methanol, in ratios as high at 1:2. Still relatively safe (not 100% safe).

However, it should be noted that as per OSHA standards (the US organization that sets rules for safe working environments), it is prohibited to use methanol indoors. No data for windshield wiper fluid exists, that I know.

If anyone wants to contribute something, please indicate your source of info for: tolerable levels of methanol vapors (if any). Obviously those of us that drive/ride in cars do breathe the stuff, so there's got to be something, somewhere.

I would stay with ethanol vs. methanol.

page 2 has a listing on where to order lab grade for cheap! Just don't shake your drink, only stir slowly. ... I mean pour it slowly in the reservoir. ;)
