How well does MCP650 respond to 13.5v overvolting?
Hi guys, i know Cathar tested the MCP655 with the 5 turn dial and the MCP655 didn't respond at all to overvolting the pump. And MCP600 responded best to 13.5-13.8v.
But i haven't read anything as to how the middle brother pump, MCP650 responds to say 13.5v ? Anyone got any figures like tha of Cathar's MCP600 testing ? thanks George |

I marked the max voltage output on the black switch/relay box myself to tell them apart :D Before i had my MCP650 pump at 12.4 to 12.6v via my pc's psu which meant i had to overvolt my psu's 12v rail and all 12v powered fans and 12v rail using devices. But now i can run pc psu closer to 12v and still shove some volts up my pump :) This is with MCP650 at 13.23v - seems to get a bit more stable and finally completed 32M at 3024mhz! Timings were looser than my sub 24min time at 3015mhz though heh. http://www.fileshosts.com/DFI/NF4_SL...rpi-32m_tn.jpg These custom psus are awesome since I'm no electronics guru so saved my time and possibly blowing up my pc gear trying myself and got Kayl to do all the work :) Kayl did an excellent job as last night i let the psu run my MCP650 @13.23v overnight and no probs. Noticed post-load temps drop to idle levels alot quicker now. i.e. with 1.55v vcore with Swiftech G4 Storm + Thermochill 120.3 with 6x120x38mm Panaflo 103cfm fans room ambient = 27.4C before at 12.4-12.6v on MCP650 before stressing cpu idle = 38C cpu load = 49-52C post stressing cpu idle = would drop to 40-41C for 1-3 seconds and then drop to 39C then 38C now at 13.23v on MCP650 before stressing cpu idle = 37-38C cpu load = 46-51C post stressing cpu idle = would drop immediately to 38C I guess the custom psu would have better improvements overvolting MCP600 or MC350 pumps but seems MCP650 is liking it too :) Going to play with the voltage output and see what's best for my MCP650. edit: I upped the psu to 13.49v for my MCP650 pump 2808mhz at 1.408v (112W) http://www.fileshosts.com/DFI/NF4_SL..._burnin_tn.jpg ambient = 27.8C cpu idle = 34C cpu load = 45-46C C/W = (46-27.8) / 112 = 0.1625 :) |
Numbers seem high to me considering your setup has a strong pump also being overvolted, excellent block and large rad with not 3 but 6 high speed fans.
Take a picture of the block base with thermal grease, the cpu with the grease, and then remount the block and come back with temps. The swiftech block has C/w of around .8-.10 accord to pH test and c/w .11-.12 on systemcooling. You have .1625 C/W. That's a five temp in difference. I notice the temps got above 40 degrees and I knew something was off. I doubt you will put more than 110 watts out from the fx-57 so the 112 watts is very conservative. I believe that number is usually power draw wattage and heat output wattages is lower around 100 watts due to psu efficiency around 80%. |
