What's the optimal height for a fan shroud?

about 1.2m but you didnt want to hear that. Look at the height on thermochills and punt guess something about that probably want to make it on the larger size. |
Thermochill Shroud depth for the PS120 range is only the depth that it is because the customer who originally asked for a shroud template specified he wanted that depth... from the one he produced, loads more contacted us asking if we could make em, so we churned em out based on that original design spec... it wasn't a calculated figure for anything other than his space requirements.
Personally I'd have gone bigger too... around 70mm from fan to core surface... |
that is a good question. i suppose it depends on how much space you have at your disposal? my watercooling stuff is all inside my case; my shroud is one inch deep.
how deep can you make it befor the fan is useless? unlimited? someone should make a variable shroud with a max distance something bizarre like 20 or 30 feet. get an airflow meter to see if the distance affects the fans performance. hmm....i have a spare fan and a dead 'core....and a LOT of cardboard boxes. whats a decent airflow meter that doesn't cost too much? :D |
Fan Engn suggests 40% of the fan dia, for larger apps
I've found that a 1/4" helps, more not noticeable re performance absolute low noise not addressed in the above |
cyco equatiosn suggest that it need not be above 1.2m so 30ft is not required but at this distance the effect of wall friction on the fan and of a fully developed velocity profile needs to be considere
I'm not sure of the info of what bill speaks but it sounds a good ball park figure as a nice minimum. |

if Overall dimensions HxWxD = 214x166x50mm (90mm inc shroud).. that leaves 40 for the shroud ...*confused*

Seems to me this question just keeps coming up time and time again.
Maybe someone who can measure delta-T's well can also look to be able to measure dBA and do a test? Perhaps construct a simple shroud using styrofoam that is like a foot from fan to rad, and then shave off an inch at a a time and measure the delta-T or C/W and the dBA when fan is pushing then pulling. Suggest PA120.1 and one fan at 12v? Volunteers? |
