Two different pumps in series?
 

I have a D4, and a D5 pump. Could I run them both in series and see some benefit? ... or do they have to be matched pumps to do any good?

No they will be fine. I would however, have the D4 feeding the D5, but that is just me. If say you were asking about an Eheim 1046 and a D5, I would say don't bother but the 4 and 5 are nearly identical in terms of pressure, perhaps the 5 is a bit more powerful which is why I'd have it just before the 5. Benefit? depends on many things, but you will see a bit more flow but also more heat. What does the full setup consist of?

Loop:

Storm > Maze4 > EK NF4 > PA120.3 > Dual Bayres > Pumps in question.
1/2"ID 3/4"OD Tygon tube.

The idea is to get a little more flow for that storm to work with, and I've already got the D4... So I figure if I can ADD the D5 instead of REPLACE the D4 with it, that would be good. ... if it will benefit flowrate. So have the D4 feeding the D5 yes? I'm pretty sure that rad can handle the extra heat dump of another pump, so that doesn't really worry me. + I'll have a 120mm fan blowing on the back of the pumps to help keep them cooled off.

Just want to make sure they don't cancel eachother out or something like that.

Yeah with that rad, go for it. No the pumps wont cancel each other out, you will essentially double the pressure which, if my math is correct, should yeild you about a 33% increase in flowrate. It would take roughly 4 D4/5's to double the flow of one D4/5.

Would running three pumps be beneficial with my loop? ... say two D5's with a D4 feeding them?

I'm running three blocks... so I want to give the storm as much flow as possible.

The difference between 2 and 3 would likely be undetectable by your reporting software, your OC may increase or decrease if the additional 15W or so has any ill effect. Not easy to fit 3 in the loop either.

I have a UFO... so I can fit them. :) ... but I think i'll stick with two based on your recomendation.
