Quantum 2000 won't see second drive
 

I need some help. I have a Quantum 2000 that has a single 20gb drive. I inserted a second drive in the empty position and it will not see the second drive. Can anyone tell me what I need to do that will make it see the second drive? It's only an 80gb so no issues with the 48bit LBA and, if I replace the original drive with the 80, it sees the 80 fine. Thanks.

Check your jumpers.
The drive a the end of the cable (front) is Master, the other slave (rear).

Now, here's a rather dumb question I guess. There looks to be 2 independent IDE channels. I connected one drive to the front (original) position and used anothre cable to connect the second to the port which is labeled IDE2. Should they both be attached to the first channel only?

You may have one of the newer model 2000. If that's the case, both drives need to be set as master. Your ram chip should be be a dimm chip. The older ones use a simms. If you would post the versions of your hw, bios, os.

It's the newer model with the DIMM which was quickly replaced with a 128MB. I got the first IDE channel to recognize both drives, but nothing seems to work on the second channel at all. Here are my digits:

SW 3.4.805
HW 2.0.0
Code Page 437
BIOS 2.0.282
Serial 46940

I just put the 3.4.805 on and once I connected both drives on the same cable, all seemed to be well. Just don't like that the second channel is not functioning.

OK, There was a user seeking help several weeks ago had a 4000 that acted like a 2000 model. Was unable to reset the bios byte.

From the debug page issue the cmd " bios model " corrected cmd.
A table pointing at the correct model 0 = 2 drives

Do what-a-hoo-haa? I guess that one when way over my head. I get the part about going to the debug page and entering the "bios model model" command. But the part about the table didn't make it. Thanks.

The command is bios model

When you execute that command, you get a result returned

Something like

That is what david refers to as a 'table' this shows on mine mine is a 2 drive unit (2***)

These controller boards can also be used in the 4000's. And some users have done just that. But that a different ball of wax. Have you tried replacing the ide cable. Is your's 40 or 80 cond? My 2000 power connectors were pretty loose, I don't know if the heat cause this. It was the cause of one of my drives not spinning up.

Are you using RAID 1? If so you could use dd to copy the image on the good hd to the second.
