Ioport.com Peltier PS Kit

Hi everyone,
I'm wondering what you guys think about these PS kit that ioport guys sell?
I'm looking for a small PS like this one to be used inside my Enermax 989AL-00 to cool down my XP1600+.
Do you guys recommend it?

and one more thing, how about the EMI, 'cause it's going to be installed close to the motherboard and AGP/PCI devices? Doesn't it require some kind of shielding?

Here's the link: http://www.ioport.com/peltiers.html

and the pictures:

Thanks in advance?

EMI might be a problem.

The 60Hz will get into the soundcard and you will hear it (60Hz in the audible range).
Try, and if you hear the 60Hz, you may have to move the trans away, EMI are not easy to get rid off.

For the videocard, I don't know if it will affect it. You might see artefacs on the screen.

Good luck.

Looks like a simple unregulated power supply, easy to make, but heavy compared to a switch mode. Also you should bolt the rectifer to a metal surface with heatsink goop as it will get hot.
EMI may be a problem, iron frame transformers like that put out quite a bit, torroidal models are better. The easiest way to stop it is to use a steel box around the transformer.

so I'm right in thinking that EMI might be a problem...I don't see any kind of box around the transformer at all in those pictures... hmm????

They're asking $100 for this PS assembled.
and they're using it in their MaximusPCs.

Do you guys know where I can get it cheaper, or a torrodial one that you mentioned maybe?

They sell this PS for 156W TB-127-2.0-1.15 pelt... actually I want to use a better pelt (or pelts like dual 120Ws) for my XP1600+, but I can't find a small form PS to fit inside the Enermax 989-AL aluminum case.

thanks for your help

Look around for a switch mode power supply. They're much lighter, run cooler and come in fairly small units. One to power the 156W will be easy to find as 13.8V psus are used for radio equipment so are fairly common. a 20+V supply for 120s or 172s will be somewhat harder to find. Looking at about $120-$200 new for a suitable switch mode supply. I'd link you up but I only have links to UK suppliers ;)

the link to meanwells site is in the big power supply discussion we have going on.

AL666 12-17-2001 09:42 AM

thanks alot butcher, I'm looking in to it...

I guess the Meanwell SP-200 might work with the Drift 0.8 172W @ 20V and with the 156W pelt @ 12V but even that PS big... 199X 99x 50mm...

anyways thanks for your help guys...

AL666 12-17-2001 09:45 AM

thx Resago I was just looking at the meanwell PSs @ peaktopeakpower.com heheh;0)
I guess you post the message while I was typing mine ;)

Butcher 12-17-2001 04:22 PM

switch mode supplies often aren't that small but they are _very_ light and run cool.

AL666 12-18-2001 11:56 PM

one more question if I go with the SP200 and Drift 0.8 172W, how am I going to adjust the PS to work @ 20V? does it have a knob or something to adjust the voltage?
because the Drift 0.8 is rated @ 24.6V, 11A and SP200 is rated @ 24V, 8.4A?

thx

resago 12-19-2001 09:29 AM

on the specs, it says there is a 10% adjustment. so you've got 22-26v.

AL666 12-19-2001 06:39 PM

so do you think it is OK to use with 172W pelt?

Butcher 12-19-2001 07:29 PM

I think you'll need something with a bigger power rating for a drift 0.8

resago 12-19-2001 09:15 PM

the s-350 is what you want, only $103.
plenty of power for either a 172watt or 220watt pelt.

AL666 12-19-2001 11:06 PM

the only problem is the size factor...
That's the only reason why I keep asking about the SP200.
but thx anyways ;)

resago 12-20-2001 09:56 AM

its fairly small, should sit in the bottom of most cases easily.

AL666 12-20-2001 11:54 AM

well it sure can easily sit @ the bottom of my Addtronics 7896A, its got plenty of room but I'm looking for a pelt PSU for my Enermax 989AL-00 aluminum case and it doesn't have enough room @ the bottom.
The SP200 fits to the 3.5" bays because its dimensions are 199X 99X 50mm, but the S350 won't.
I'm going to try to install S350 to the side fan panel, hope it works.
If you want to see the case that I'm talking about. Here're the links.
http://www.enermax.com.tw/products/pc-main.htm
Choose CS-989AL-03;CS-989AL-05 from the pull down menu.
and here's a better link that compares 688AL to 989AL.

AL666 12-20-2001 12:26 PM

I just called Peaktopeakpower to place an order. they don't have S350 in stock and they don't know when they'll have it. They said, it doesn't have UL approval on its safety features yet etc.
So I ended up getting the S320.
if any of you guys are interested in getting a Meanwell PS from peaktopeakpower I strongly recommend you to call them first.
