Snap OS 3.4.805 versus 4.0.830
Can anyone point me to a quick comparison between these two OSs? Also, is 4.x the "Guardian OS"?
I have a Snap 2200 with 2-160GB WD drives. It's running 3.4.805 currently. I'm looking for opinions on whether or not it's worth going to the 4.x OS. I'd also like to know if the overhead of the 4.x version will by "too much" for the Snap 2200. Also, if I go to 4.x, can I revert back to 3.x if I decide to? Thanks!! |
Re: Snap OS 3.4.805 versus 4.0.830
The only reason to upgrade to 4.x would be if you needed MS Active Directory support. If you don't need this, then I wouldn't upgrade. The only thing you will get is a slower snap server.

Re: Snap OS 3.4.805 versus 4.0.830
jontz, nicely put on the upgrade.
On a 2200 you can back up an upgrade, but everything will be loss. It requires starting completely over with a image file. The ram is fixed and the newer OS requires more ram. The reason for the slower snap after upgrade. My 2200 with 2 x 300 gig drives in RAID 1 only has a max transfer speed of 3-4 meg/sec. It came with 4.0.860 all ready on it. My FreeNAS test box running Software raid like a 2000, does over 8 meg/sec. A 2000 has a transfer speed around 1 meg/sec. |

Thanks all. I assumed the newer OS would slow the thing down. Thanks for the confirmation

And BTW DelMarLocal, Version 4.x is NOT the Guardian OS. Guardian is a different ball of wax alltogether. |
Re: Snap OS 3.4.805 versus 4.0.830
Thanks for the clarification. Thought 4.x was Guardian.
Is Guardian worth buying? Does it also have so much overhead that the 2200's preformance will be degraded? Thanks again. |
Re: Snap OS 3.4.805 versus 4.0.830
I've never dealt with Guardian. I have heard that it is much more feature rich than the snap OS, but I can't vouch for that. As far as I know the Guardian OS won't run on older snaps like the 2200 at all. I believe that it will only run on snap servers that came from the factory with Guardian installed, such as the 4200. Blue68f100 or re3dyb0y would have to confirm this though.

Re: Snap OS 3.4.805 versus 4.0.830
The guaridan OS is only at v3.4 - 4.1 depending on which mode of the snap you have. The File size is 4 times the Snap OS (30 meg vs 112 meg). It is design for the 12000 up models. Some of the dell 705N had version 2 installed. Most have upgraded to the Snap OS. Because there was no way of recvering of all the drives were removed and sold.
