confused about snap os internals

i am working on an old 1100. it only has one drive. without a hard drive this device does not boot. so it's one of the older models.

but where is the actual OS and data stored? i don't think it's stored on the first partition on the drive or the drive at all.

the reason i am sure is because i recenty had to fix one.

the drive was on the fritz. i did a dd in a UNIX from old bad drive to a new 80 gig just to test it.

it worked. i made significat config changes, name changes and so on on the 80 gig. once i was confident that it was going to work. i got a larger 250gig and i imaged from the original bad drive.

when i switched the drives, the new imaged drive from the original bad drive had the new config i was playing around with. ???

Yeah, most of it seems to be saved on the hard drive, but there are bits stored on the flashram, hence it saving IP address and such

in my case, it';s saving a lot more than just network config.

it pretty much saved everything from user acconts, passwords, shares and all.

Re: confused about snap os internals

The password and drive config data is actually stored in the clock register. It has a battery that is good for 10 yrs.

The OS is storred on the fist 20-25 meg of the HD. All 1100 store the OS on the HD. They are hidden from mormal access till you get into debug.

Check to see if you are getting full capacity. Most cases if you copy HD or image file to a new HD you need to reinit the drive if you don't have full capacity.
