Upgrading HDD's in 2200?
Hi there,
I have a Quantum SnapServer 2200 that has given sterling service since I purchased it brand new - well apart from it failing with the recall issue under warranty and being replaced by Quantum. It has 2 x 80GB drives in it striped as a single 160GB drive and although that was a huge amount of space to begin with it is very limiting now. I wish to increase the capacity to install 2 x 250GB drives (or larger) and wondered how best to go about it? It would be great if I could do this and keep my data intact but obviously my prime concern is to increase the capacity. Is there a preference for any particular make/model of drive? What would be the best procedure to replace both drives in my 2200? Thanks & regards, -=Glyn=- |

Since the data is stripped, you will be required to do a backup. There is no way to save the data during a upgrade, or drive failure.
Any particular reason you are running raid 0? JBOD is a lot safer and give you the same capacity, with less risk. It hasn't been tried with a raid0, but you could use dd and copy the drives. The only problem is correcting the MBR table. You have to use the format /reinit cmd. A procedure that has worked requires the unit to be in raid1. Raid 1, fail (disconnect power) top drive (id 10000), verify unit will startup Powerdown, Replace top drive allow unit to format, and copy the OS. do the same procedure for the second. Then do any OS upgrades and reinit to corect the drive capacity. If you don't want to go through all of the swaps. You can use DD to copy the first 25 meg of the hd to the new drives. Then just reformat the dirves from debug and setup. The snap will base the capacity off of the top drive. What version of OS are you running? You will need v3.4.805 or v4 for large disk (>137gig) support. |

Thanks for the reply blue68f100,
The reason I have been running RAID 0 was simple - at the beginning my server had 8 x 4.5GB drives in a RAID 5 array for redundancy and I just wanted the maximum capacity I could get as a network drive! I have Ghost! and an earlier version of Drive Image and Server Magic here but excuse my ignorance "use dd to copy the drives" - what is DD? Also a detailed explanation of the format / reinint / debug /setup commands would be appreciated - is there any resource out there that explains in detail please? I am running 3.4.803 (UK) but did purchase SnapOS_40830_2X00 some time ago but as everything was working OK never got round to installing it... I see from your sig that you have upgraded your 2200 with 2 x 400GB drives - does everything work as expected? I shall try & ignore the last line in your sig that ends with the word 'fried' Thanks & regards, -=Glyn=- |
Re: Upgrading HDD's in 2200?
The fried part wasn't the result of upgrading, but rather a fan dying and the hard drives cooking. A good lesson for all of us: inspect your fans every 6 months or so...

Look at my 2000. Lost 2 drives and MB now has a problems. All due to a fan failure, and forgot to update the email notification. Had no indication till One day server found error on boot. Was so hot it would burn your bare legs. The original fan was so quite I couldn't hear it. When I got my 2200, I replaced the fan with a higher cfm, can hear it now.
