Snap 2000 - Upgrade possibilities?
 

I've been reading on the boards quite a bit lately but just now needed to post. Here's the question.

I recently purchased a Snap 2000 with the following info.

Model - 2000 Series
Software - 3.0.566 (US)
Hardware - 1.1.0
BIOS - 1.2.180

The first thing I did when I got it was crack it open, and take a look at things. The first thing I noticed that scared me was the fact it has 72pin memory. From what I've been reading 2000s can be upgraded to v4 of the OS with a suggested memory size of 128mb. Well, this little guy has a whopping 32mb of memory. I'm on the hunt for some memory, I'm sure a friend of mine has some (or so I hope), but in the meantime I wanted to ask the following.

Is it even going to be possible? The older style memory makes me ask, had it been anything different I would've slapped the new memory in and went to town. So for any of those with more experience, maybe even with 2000s with the same 72pin memory, I'd appreciate any input.

From what I've seen I'm sure there will be several who hop in and help, so thanks in advance.

Is there any reason that you need to upgrade to V4? The only thing you gain is Microsoft AD support. If you don't need that, I would only upgrade to OS 3.4.805 and bump the ram up to 64 MB as 128MB 72 pin simms are sometimes hard to locate and expensive. .805 will give you large drive support if that is all you are really after.

Good question, I wasn't 100% aware that it v4s only major advantage was AD support. So if all I need is 64mb and .805 that should make life a little easier. Time to ask around a 64mb stick.

You have a version 1 2000. (SIMM's)

Don't upgrade to v4, does not like it.

Large disk are not supported on this model.

Extra ram helps the software raid some. But I had problem finding ram that would work in mine. I was testing with old ram pulled from pc's. I think the max for simms is 64 meg. Original is double sided.

It's a good unit, slap in 2 120's and let it go. set for Raid 1 and use it for backups. Transfer speed will be around 1.6 MB/s.

Would replace the fan if original.

Correct. V1 SIMM's units BIOS(1.2.180)/hardware does not support hd >137gig. So no matter which OS you have loaded. It has been reported that v4.0.860 brings the unit to it's knees. It will run v4.0.830 but it is slower than v3.

Well I just picked up a 2000 on eBay that is probably a version 1.

Even if I can only get it up to 2-120gb it will suit my immediate needs cheaply.

The original on a v1 2000 was only 8.5cfm.

I have recently acquired a Snap! Server 2000. I was able to power it up and install it on my network without incident. But being that it is a version 1 with only 2 x 6.4GB drives, it will require some ‘upgrading’ to attain its full potential. I have endeavored to perform due diligence in order to not belabor the form with newbie questions. So here goes…

THE PLAN
I am aware that the Version 1 hardware will not support >137GB drive capacity regardless of OS/Bios installed.
Therefore my goal is to install a couple of 120GB drives and upgrade the memory to 64MB or 128MB (if rea$onably available).
My understanding, from pouring over the many threads on this forum, is that in order to have a reasonable expectation of achieving this goal I must perform the following tasks.

1. Upgrade the Bios from 1.0.077 to as high a version as possible on this hardware. (probably 1.2.180). This requires a file (‘UpdateBios.exe” I think) which I do not possess.

2. Upgrade the OS from 1.0.097 to a Version 2 level; an intermediate step. This requires a file (‘UpdateSnap.exe” I think) which I do not possess.

3. Upgrade the OS from Version 2 level to Version 3.4.803/805. (probably 803 is the highest that is needed, but 805 would be nice for any supplemental niceties not available in 803). This requires a .sup file, again, which I do not possess.

If I get this far the Snap! 2000 should be able to recognize up to 137GB capacity on drives observing the attendant ATA speed and cable requirements.

Before doing any upgrades you need to blow all settings back to factory settings. Then change the drives config to JBOD before starting the update process.

You are correct that the bios is 1st, then to OS v2. These are done through Assist with the earlier OS's. Then upgrade to v3.0.803 via web interface. Once all of this is done, all that is needed is power down and install new drives as M/S then setback and watch it work.

I have a copy of SnapAppliance Documents cover the upgrade processn from v1 to 3. I will dig them up and send them to you.

As for RAM, It is 32 meg SIMM's EDO. This old model is picky. I think the max is 64-128. Save this for last.

You should also replace the cooling fan, the 12 cfm will work fine. Remember it has a 52x52 size, not the popular 50x050. The 50x50 will work, just need to elongate the holes. Needed for the 7200 rpm drives. Stay away from EIDE drives, cause problems, only need ATA66.

ASSIST did not come with the Version 1 CD. Also at present when navigating the web GUI, no reference is made to RAID or JBOD. Will this become visible when I reset to the factory settings?

So I upgraded to 4.0.83 because I got error messages trying to load the JVM. Only now do I find the debug that seems to indicate that it was already there...

And worse..... I used debug to enable SSL, and now I can not get back into the SNAP...

Good luck! After going down this road this past week (unsuccessfully I must add) I will read your progress with great interest. Also, I'm still looking for my bios and Snap OS upgrade files, if I find them I'll let you know. A quick couple of things that may save you some time:

1. Locate the homepage for your replacement HD's before you purchase them. Ensure all their particulars are correct, and that it is easy to get their utility tools to downgrade the drive ATA speed if necessary.

2. Always unplug the Snap power cable before doing any internal work. I acted too quickly a few days ago, and blew the fuse when something accidentally touched something else. i was lucky that it was only the fuse that blew. The power switch is only a "soft switch" and doesn't turn off the juice.

3. Print out all your Snap admin settings using the "hidden config" page. http://snapservername/config/debug/ -- you know what to do with snapservername ...

4. Backup all your Snap data to another harddrive first - probably not a biggie since you just got the server.

How long did you leave it up? There was a similar incident over a year ago. It took 30 min before it timed out and came up.

The 2000 will boot with NO drives.... Have you tried that.

You may want to expand the ram. That will proably fix it.

Looking at my 2200 "debug memory" I do not see enough free ram to load JVM. Jvm requires 24 meg. 4X00 with 128 will have no problem. At least you can expand the ram in yours. 2200 is fixed.

The SNAP is running just fine [I have regular file-sharing, etc...]; it's just I can not get admin access.

I assume it's the missing $JAVA share.
