Snap Server 1100
 

Greetings everyone,
I'm new to Pro fourms.

I was given an 1100 snap server with no hard drive. I purchased a seagate 200 GB drive for it but can't find the os anywhere. Can someone please tell me where to look for it?

You cant just install the OS onto the drive, you need a drive with the OS already on it. And to make a copy of that drive's contents.

Ok, I need an image of the drive.
The OS. must be in the unit then.
On the case it says 250 GB. Will an image work with a 200 GB drive?

the OS is stored in the first ~30mb on the drive, which is why you need the image, the snap 2000, 4000, and one or 2 others have the OS on the unit.

You can make a drive out of any size you want to. As long as it's an ATA/100 drive and doesnt take a whole ton of power to turn. you can put a drive as large as the new 750's in there if you want to get real crazy. it works.

As far as getting an image, it's not so easy. Easiest thing would be for you to send your drive to one of us and have an image put on your drive.

If you want to see what is involved, look in the wiki section of this fourm. You will find several articles on this. It is not difficult, if you have the right tools and can follow the detail instructions. But it seams about 40% have problem reading and wipe their good drive out. They forget who's on what.

I have everything I need for several empty 1100 units, except the HD image(s).

Either I'm doing something wrong or the procedures using Knoppix to copy an 1000 image to another HD to install into a 1100 doesn't apply. If I could get these 1100's to be seen by my Assist Utility (4.806) I can upgrade on my own.

Any help would be appreciated.

I think the 1000 and 1100 images are different. It depends mostly on the hardware version. the proceedures in the Wiki work. I've used them myself, but that was just for upgrading to a larger HDD. Be sure your origonal images are os 3.4.805 or later if the new drives are over 120gb.

I can tell you there ARE different versions of the 1100, and different versions of the 1000, and all the images are NOT interchangeable.

I know for a fact that if you have a newer 1100 unit (it will say Snap Appliance on the front as well as Snap Server 1100), it has a new version BIOS and requires at least OS version 4.0.855 to work.

I BELIEVE that an image from a HW version 2 1000 will work on an early model 1100 (not sure of HW version number).

Both of my 1100 units ar enewer models, and the server numbers start with the number 2 (which I think means HW version 2, but I can't attest to it).

I would be on my way to test my snap but I have commited another Doh.

I misplaced the power supply. :doh: Would anyone know what the voltage/amp and polarity (if DC) would be.

Be wary of the one listed here from the company Mouser. It meets the voltage/amperage requirements, and it was recommeded here, so I bought a couple. When they arrived (to my dismay!), I discovered the internal hole on the connector was too small for both my 1000 and my 1100. Rather than ship them back and try and find a different source, I just "modified" them by enlarging the hole enough so it will plug in. I guess it was worth it in the long run, it is a higher amperage than the original, and quite a bit cheaper than a replacement from Adaptec.

Also, it seems that 12v 3.5A adapters are very common for LCD monitors, so it may be easy to find one in a local used computer shop, as long as the connector is the right size.

It was stated in one of the post that Sunon PN grouped the 50 and 52mm fans together. It was also stated that the holes needed to be elongated. Which is what I did due to 52x52 fans are not common. Just a minor mod, nothing difficult to do.
