Drive size limit in an 1100?
 

Does anyone know what the drive size limit is in an 1100 (if there is one)? If it's the magical 1TB, that would be great, COMPUSA has Seagate 750GB drives on sale this week, and I think even formatted, over 675GB in that small of a package would nice to have.

Well ive got a 300gb in mine so i'm willing to wajor the 750 would work. The only thing to worry about i think it the power requirements of the drive. and, make sure it's an ATA/100 drive. I THINK i remember reading that ATA/133 drives wouldn't work for some reason. Although i dont see why they wouldnt. What's the current sale price on those 750's?

It is an ATA/100 drive, price after a $50 rebate is $279

I checked the specs, and It takes 2 amps to spin up, and 12 watts when running. I believe this is comparable with Seagate's other large drives.

Then it should be good to go. I wouldn't mind putting 2 of those bad boys in a 2200 :)

I'v Seen 500gig on ebay, The 750 add another platter and heads. The kernel should read it with no problem. Have not idea how the OS will react. Should not cause a problem once it starts spinning. The High current startup i think last for the first 10 sec then drops to nornal runtime values.

Keep us posted on how it works out.

Let's not forget the heat of the drive. Inside those units, without proper cooling, you are going to cook the electronics over time, as well as the drive itself. More platters not only means more power, but more heat...

True, The only thing Maxtor got from the quantum buyout was the Fireball part, lol. Their drives get so hot without proper venting you cant even touch them.

I don't think power will be an issue, it seems the power requirements are about the same as other drives at 250GB and above.

The temerature issue is a good point. I did find it interesting though, that an 1100 has a steel case as opposed to the aluminum one of the 1000. Better hard drive technology in the past few years, i.e. they run cooler? Perhaps a fav upgrade for the unit would be in order. I reied to find specs for the part number on the fan in one of my 1100, but can't find any. I know it's a 40mm 12 volt fan, but don't know what the CFM rating is, anybosy know?

Well here's my not-very-scientific report of things:

Drive replacement went without a hitch, from an 80GB to the 750GB, using the established procedures in the Wiki (HD->img, then img->HD). The reformat after putting the image on the drive took about 6 minutes, formatted capacity is 701,994 MB

As for the heat issue, using my very accurately calibrated hand <wink>, it seems to run at about the same temp as my other 1100 with the factory 80GB Maxtor drive in it, and it actually runs a little cooler than an 1100 with a WD 250GB drive.

Just thought inquiring minds would like to know!

that means you could probably put 2x750 in a 2200 and have a 1.4tb server :)

That is exceeding the 1.2TB limit, so I'm not sure if you could have a RAID1, but I assume 2 700GB shares would work.

I just bought 2x 400 Seagates because they were on sale for $109 each. Now all i need is a 2000 or 2200 to put them in, lol


Yah, i think 2x700gb shares would be the way to go. Even in a Mirror fassion would be good.
