snap 2200 - Mixing Disk RPM's

Hey,

Searched for answers but could not find what I was looking for.

I have a dead Seagate ST380020A (80GB, 5400RPM) in my 2200. I would like to replace it with an 80GB 7200RPM. Would there be an issue?

I am aware of the fan upgrade for the heat and have one on order that runs at 4300 RPM so that should help the heat issue.

I may just upgrade both to larger drives but would like to check out all my options first.

Also, if anyone knows where I can get a copy of OS v4 for the 2200, please PM me.

Any advice or past experiences appreciated.

Putting a newer 7200RPM drive should not be a problem. Most of the newer drives in fact run cooler than they used to...

excellent, thanks!!

The only Issues you may face, is with ATA133 drives or EIDE drives...

What are you looking at getting?

True enough...

If you are using RAID, I would not recomend mixing rpm.
It will work, but they will not be in sync.

JBOD shoudl work fine.

ATA-100... I read about issues with EIDE but are there issues with ATA-133?

There have been some reported issues

but i have used them fine

2200 do not have the problem with ata133, EIDE. It has the 80 cond cable. It's the units with 40 conductor that have reported problems.

It applies to the older 2000 v1, and 1000v1 models.

Re: snap 2200 - Mixing Disk RPM's

I had an 80-pin cable that was the exact same legnth as the 40 that came out of my 1100 so i swapped them just because. (the 80-pin cable came out of an old dead external HDD enclosure) It worked fine. I'm wondering what would happen if i try an ATA-133 in there. The only one I have is my boot drive on my desktop machine though. That one's not going anywhere.

You wouldnt notice that much difference in preformance i dont think

Re: snap 2200 - Mixing Disk RPM's

There is a major difference in drive performance. I notice a huge difference when I upgraded to the 7200rpm drives.

My 2000 had 5400's upped to 7200's. My 2200 came with 7200rpm drives.

I'm putting 7200's in my 2000 sometime, ive got the drives, just too lazy right now to unbox them.

The 2000's only have a ATA66 interface. Not sure of the v2 models.

Mine is a V2, so we'll find out.

Re: snap 2200 - Mixing Disk RPM's

My experience with 5400 vs 7200 hasn't been in drive throughput, but in seek times. 7200 RPM drives have much lower seek times than 5400, but in raw read/write I don't see too much difference. The different seeks times would definitely cause RAID problems though, so Blue is right, as always. Stay away from mixed drive RAID.

In general, it is just not wise to mix ANYTHING in a RAID array...

Nope, you were TOO SPECIFIC... :p

actually he said stay away from mixed drive raid, that could mean rpm, size, cache, So it's really pretty vague and all encompasing. :)
