snapserver 1100 many problems
 

Need some advice to see if this is worth fixing. By fixing, I mean replacing the HD, doing a flash or IMG copy or general trouble shoot. I don't mind tinkering with it. My work is going to trash this but I can keep it if I want.
Case says Quantum Snapserver 1100 (an older one)
GUI says model 1000 series,software 3.4.772 (us), hardware 2.0.3,server#165320,BIOS 3.4.758.
Problem 1:It rarely powers on. I have tested the AC adapter and its putting out 12v. The green light is on, on the AC adapter. I've inspected the mobo and I can't see any loose or broken solder joints although I will look at later under a magnifying glass. I've wiggled the power connections and it usually doesn't do anything but every once in a while, it will power up. I'm suspecting the on switch at this point.
Problem 2: When the unit finally comes up, I can get to the GUI but now the clock is ticking. After about 20 minutes I loose my network connection(but the power remains on)and have no choice but to power off/on and then I'm back to problem 1.
Problem 3: For the brief time the GUI is active, it shows a folder with a red X on it and says "snapdisk - Unavailable: folder does not exist." although I think this eventually goes away. I was able to write to the drive yesterday.
Problem 4: The fan is not running. Does the 1100 fan run all the time or only when temp threshhold is reached.
I'm hoping someone with experience can help me narrow down the problems.
BTW I have reseated the battery. I put in a different used one but it did not help.

Sounds like the drive needs to be replaced. And that it's barely functional. But I could be wrong. It could just be OS corruption causing the 20 minute problem. Hard to tell without a known working drive to test it with. Imaging the Hard drive in your case might not fix it since it could be a bad drive. You could try it though using the instructions in the Wiki.

If you decide it's not worth the trouble send it my way. I can always use another project or spare part unit.

Press AND HOLD the power button for a couple seconds... See how that goes...

If the drive still, some what boots. Copy the boot tracks before it dies completely. The instruction are in the wiki section.

Holding the power button in for awhile didn't help. Thanks anyway.
UPDATE....
I copied HD to HD with Knoppix. Booted to the new drive and reformatted in debug mode. Lost network. Did a reset on ALL settings. Restarted and haven't lost network to it all day long. I may have problem#2 and #3 fixed. Rebooted 7 times today and it came back everytime until I did a shutdown. Then it wouldn't power on. I noticed that when I have this problem, the green system light was off. If I wiggle things around a bit, the green light comes on and the unit powers up. I am going to take the mobo to a friend who worked on boards for a living. Maybe he can spot something.
As far as problem#4 goes... The fan came on once when the unit got hot. Is this the norm for this unit? Also I can't remember which way the airflow goes. Right now it is setup blowing across the HD and out the back.

Eh, it was worth a shot, sorry. Some people do not know you have to press and hold it a second not just quick press. Plus, some of those units have stiff power switches.

Got a used 1100 of similar vintage that behaves as in your problem 1 just as you describe (none of the other problems though). I have found that unplugging and replugging the power pack into the unit can make a difference. Other times, if I repeatedly press the power button a dozen or so times it will eventually turn on. Not sure what is going on there. Once I do get it powered on, it operates just fine. Haven't been in the box yet, but I would also be curious were anyone to have any ideas on this issue. JELo

P. S. Have used the same power supply with a 1000 and it works perfectly there
- so I don't think the power supply is the problem.

Remember you are required to hold the button in for ~5 seconds to start and shutdown. They are design to run 24/7, leave it on with a ups for backup.

Hmmm . . . Have tried to hold down the power button for extended periods but it doesn't seem to do the job. Unplugging, replugging power seems to have to happen first. Checked the internal battery and it measures 3.0v. I will continue to use it and see if I can't find some pattern to its behavior.

Have UPS set up for my rack system and Snap1100 will likely reside there eventually but I was currently hoping to put a big drive in it and transport data on it.

OT - Also, couldn't find an email address for web page author, but the "dmesg | grep hd" command on the HD to IMG and IMG to HD pages does not show the pipe "|" character.

Check the underside of the board very closely. Specifically the solder joints to the power, on/off switch, battery and IDE power. You may have to wiggle the component on top and look at the corresponding solder joint underneath. If any move, examine with a magnifying glass and if any are cracked, resolder.
If the unit powers up but not the HD, check the short IDE power connector.
