Snap 2000....and lots of questions.
 

Snap 2000 s/n 38351 with 2 quantum fireball cs drives (20 gig each)

I have read through the wiki and many of the threads in the forums.

Not sure on the drives....right-click-properties does not display any usefull info on the drives or capacities.
And of course....can I upgrade and how large of a pair of drives can I install?

It does appear to function properly by showing up on my network and I am able to copy to it and pull files from it.

There does not appear to be an "snap OS" or any management software ..... what to do?

I have also scoured the net and the torrents looking for the 3.4.850 Snap OS...no luck.

There is an intermittent fan noise from inside....I assume-ing its from the cpu fan.
Is their a dedicated replacement or has someone done a mod of any sort?
The rear exhaust fan looks easy enough to replace even if it appears to be functioning fine.

My goal is to use this to host my configurations, utility files, drivers and music for the house.

To find out your current OS version you need to login as admin. Then click on the SnapAppliance logo. You will need v3.4.805 or greater if you want large disk support (>137gig).

The v2 2000 has a fan on the cpu, not sure how it's fastened.

I think the V2's CPU fan is held down with thermal adhesive but i can't remember for sure. I didnt take it apart to the extent that i did on my V1.

The cpu fan looks like a the typical adhesive mount, already have suitable replacement.
Mine is a Quantum Snap 2000
Not sure how to login into the Snap as an admin.
Under properties it shows LanMan 3.1
Is there special keystroke commands to acccess this?


It shows up on the network and I am using it as it, it appears to be functioning normally.

BUT!!!.....I definitely want to mod this unit for larger capacity.
I was successful in D/L a copy of 3.4.805....but I have not unpacked it and I need to read the install instructions.

Hallis.........I see you are listing 3.4.807 on your quantum.....do I need 807 or can I use 805 to run a pair of larger drives ?????

To login as admin, http://ipaddress, there you will be prompted for user ID and password. If you need to reset the admin password, instructions can be found in the wiki section, 2 blinks clears only the admin password.

I would NOT reset back to factory (4 blinks). If you do, you may need assist to locate and do the inital setup.

3.4.805 and up supports large cap drives.

But of course....it wont let me in without a password.
So I would need help with that task.

the reset proceedure is simple enough, its in the wiki. its a simple LED flash system.

Apparently I need the Assist to configure my 2000.

Update !

The software has been upgraded.....Assist worked great.
Software is now the 3.4.805

Bios still reads 2.0.252 and Hardware is 2.0.0

Do these need to be upgraded to allow for Large capacity drives ???

I installed a pair of 40 gig drives and everything updated and formatted correctly.
So....next will be to setup a pair of larger capacity to ensure I can go above the 140gig glass ceiling.

What sort of fan mods have people done to accomodate the larger/faster drives?
I have plenty of fans and ideas...just wondering what everyone else has done.

The 2000 uses a odd size 52x52x15mm fans. 50x50x15mm will work with a slight mod, elongate 2 holes. The original kd1205phb3 is very quite at 8.5 cfm. 4300rpm. I just moved up to the medium speed trying to keep it quite. In most cases it doesn't take much. The Initial format and raid build will generate the most heat. So you could leave it open and use a external fan if you like, for this stage.

If you are at the 3.4.805 it will handle large drives without any difficulty. The limiting factor for most units are the power supplies and OS. The snap os has a limit of ~1.2T. This varies with drive mfg, # of sectors.

I got another Snap Server 2000...this one has the Meridian badge.
The previous owner removed the drives and was nice enough to put all the screws in a nice little bag.

Snap Assist worked perfectly and upgraded the software.
I installed a pair of 80 gig WD's and its working fine so far.
