Snap 4100
 

Hi,

I have SNAP 4100 with 4x80GB HD. I haven't used it for a long time and after I turned it on today I've noticed flashing yellow light for disk #1.

Under disk options I can't even see disk #1 so I assume disk is bad.

I'm thinking to get new disk, but first I would like to know if I can get larger disks. For example can I get 160GB, 250GB or 400GB disks? (of course - all four of them)

Does replacement of all disk require new SNAP OS install?

It's posted all over this forum, the 4100's do not support LBA48bit addressing. So the max is 137gig.

OS is stored in flashram. Help files and JVM are stored on the HD.

Just install the HD's and let the server do it's thing. It's never a good idea to mix and match drives in raid5 array.

I was planning to get all new disks, but know when I know limitation I doubt I will replace them (except bad HD).

Yes, but I am not just a messenger, I am The Phoenix. I always rise from the ashes, and even start a few fires of my own...

Anywise, the 160's (except maxtors maybe) seem to work fine and give you the full amount the LBA48bit allows. An added bonus is that 160's can be bought for the same, and sometimes even lower, than the 120's can. Just a thought...


P.S. The reaosn for my post before is simple. It can be quite draining to answer the same questions over and over because people do not read the already large amount of information here. And before you say it is because there is so much information that people don't read it, a lot of that is because people have to keep answering the same questions over and over. This particular question was about as bad as it gets. I don't think there is hardly any thread on this forum about the 4100, and there are plenty of them, where someone did not ask and then had to be told, again, it does not support LBA48bit (137GB limit). In other words, all you had to do was read just about any thread on this forum about the 4100, and you would have found your answer.

Okay, now I feel better.... :D

np,
i know how stupid questions can be as I used to help with DOSBox on one site. I guess I was just in rush for correct answer without going trough many pages of discussions.

Idea of using 160GB is not that bad. Those drives are very cheap now. (below 90 bucks)
