Invalid File Handle? M4100
 

I have an M4100 with 4 brand new 120GB WD hard drives in it configured as a RAID-5 array.

It all looks good across the web interface, but anytime I try to copy, move, or create files on this server I get a "Cannot copy ..etc..: Invalid File Handle"

It is on a local workgroup

Software version is: 3.4.803

One small clue I believe... if I look at the Security-->File/Folder Security-->View File/Folder Security link..I get a statement on that page that says "This page is not available because no disks were found.

Everything else configures and accepts fine.

Anyone have any ideas?

And just to clarify...

If I go to "Disk Status" it says:

"RAID 5 - Large data protection disk OK"

So I don't think it has anything to do with disk configuration or integrity, it has something to do with the settings or controller... IMHO.

Once the RAID 5 Array is built, takes about 5 hr for 120gig dirves. On a freshly built array you only have a mounting point (def SHARE1) with no folders. Need to create 1, then need to setup users and access rights. If you want to connect to it when you startup your pc, make your user name the same as your pc login name.

Already watched through the formatting and building process. The RAID was set 4 days ago.

I tried doing 4 independent drives, mirroring, and RAID-5, all with the same result.

Have also tried creating, editing, and manipulating shares and directories under the root share using everyone full access and created simple user full admin rights same as my username on the computer, still the same problem.

I have never come across anything like this before as I am used to domain security which I know this one will not perform anyway because of the O.S's lack of ability to coexist with Active Directory. That is a moot point anyhow as I am simply wanting to use the built-in security on it.

Any more ideas?

You know what? I am having an awfully sneaking suspicion it has something to do with my system.

I am building a new system tomorrow night and will let you folks know what happens.

This accours with no mounting point.

Need clarification that you were not able to creat any folder, or copy any files to the 4100. Is this true.....

Folder creation is no problem. I can also copy 1 file successfully. No more than 1. After that, it locks down until I reboot my system.

I would reinstall the OS, sounds like something is corrupt. Are you using JVM? And how much ram is installed (debug memory)?

I don't have a copy of the O.S. and true to the word I have seen here, Adaptec is absolutely NO help at all......

I have tried uploading JVM with no success. It is using the original low-profile 32MB stick. I temporarily used a 128MB stick, but still no difference.

JVM requires a min of 128meg to load and run. 32meg is very small for a 4100, most all came with 64meg. Run "debug memory" from the debug page. They require a low density DIMM chip.

Problem Solved. As I stated earlier, I was building a new PC. After loading XP, it copied multiple files with no problem to the snapserver.

Sorry about all that.

Anyway, here is my new system:

Athlon 64 X2 4200+
2GB OCZ Platinum DDR2 800
250GB WD SATA 3.0GBps 16MB cache hdd
nVidia 7600 GT 256MB DDR3

Thanks for all your help man, you obviously know a lot about these servers, that is why I came here in the first place. I'm just sorry it was my crumby O.S. and I took you through all that headache.
