My Peltier Waterblock
 

Aim: To cool a 176w TEC to ~20°C above coolant temperature.

No, I cannot make the block any more detailed as the milling machines I have access to don't have great accuracy.

The block will be made from 50x50x10mm aluminium with a 3mm minimum base thickness.

The top with be made from aluminium, acrylic or plexiglas.

Fittings will be either 10mm pushfit or 3/8" Barbs

I may drill "dents" into the sides of the fins.
Eg:
Waterflow: ==0==0==0==

Acrylic and plexi are the same thing, I think you were thinking of polycarbonate which would be a much better choice than the former two. Also why aluminum? Copper would be much better to use.

Another thing you may want to look at is making the base larger as a lot of high power TECs are 62mm wide. If you already own a 50mm tec then I guess thats not a problem then.

Also would it be possible to make pins or at least thinner fins, or is your machine unable to do that? More, and thinner, fins/pins would make the block more effective.

Revised Design shown in the quite hard to work with "2D Design Software"

Base size is now 65x65mm

The Middle Plate Is shown In 2 sections (Mill and Cut) because the mills can only really do one height at a time xD

Middle Fin is *rather* large but with the machines at school it is either there, or not. So I will be making a channel through the centre of it at home with my Dremel.

Extra detail will be added with my dremel too;to add turbulance and help combat laminar flow.

Each dot is 2.5mm away from its neighbour and is there for measuring purposes only.

You may want to try putting the barbs further apart in order to maximize flow through the fins. Since the water will try to take the path of least resistance, the boundary areas may not see the same flow as the inner area.

I was thinking about the Base Plate.. Why cant you mill the middle "wall" aswell to get more area for the water..

Apparently his machine can't for some reason. I'd just mill it from a different position (i.e. shifting it an inch to the left) but then again I've never milled anything myself.

It runs in 2.5mm steps, nothing other than 2.5mm steps can be done so I'm gonna finish that off myself with my dremel.

I think you should instead widen it and just make an additional fin and reorganize them so that the spacing works out right. I can see that you don't want any large gaps between fins but don't kill yourself. Having dremmeled copper before, let me tell you that it is time intensive. If a 5 minute tweak to the design is all you need to do to widen and shift the block then I say do that.

Revived this project recently, but with a slight twist, the aluminium is no longer going to be used to make a waterblock. It is going to be used to make a pipe & smoke cooler for a friends brithday present. The school teacher still thinks it's a cooling block of course.

The dark grey areas are going to be milled to half thickness and a top of acrylic and wood (for the burning area) will be tightly screwed down.


The milling areas on the sides probably wont help with heat disappation but I think they may look cool and help with grip.

The rectangle right at the bottom of the "pipe" is where the gases and smoke escape/are pulled though.

Is this a good design? I just want it to cool the smoke slightly and look cool. Wanted to give a bit more of an interesting present than money this year and any help would be appreciated.



(Smoke goes in though the circle & out of the end of the bar; the little square is for additional tobbacco to be held. After some research into existing designs I decided to add this because it gives the tobbacco extra flavour when eventually used.)


Hope this is allowed, its still technically air cooling, just in the opposite way that it is usually discussed here.

and for a pipe for smoking stuff just maybe use copper pipe, eh? I doubt that block you posted will cool the smoke much. Also I don't think pro cooling is the place for this but your right, it is cooling. I don't see a problem right now but other mods may.
EDIT: I just looked at your profile and you are listed as being 15. You know, in October the law changed from 16 to 18 so I would really like you to clean your post up ;) As long as this is for a friend of age and you stick to cooling (and not saying any drug related BS) I think it would be ok for this thread to live.

Copper doesnt mix well with carcinogens as far as I've heard and hopefully the long path will allow for the smoke to cool anyway.

Also, the laws passed in October only increased the age for purchase not smoking in itself, doent affect me thankfully as I don't actually smoke ciggaretes, disgusting things imo.
