4 drives with SNAP 2000 HW 2.0.0
 

Got a SNAP 2000 HW 2.0.0 off ebay which arrived today. Thanks to this forum I was able to upgrade to 3.4.805.

The Snap Server has 2 IDE Slots installed. I searched the forum, but I didn't find exact infos on upgrading to 4 drives with a SNAP Server 2000. Anyone who has had some experience with this? It's not planned to run any RAID configuration on the Snap Server - just JBOD. Since I plan to move the hardware into a 19'' housing, place an airflow won't be a big problem with 4 drives installed.

When disassembling the Snap to upgrade RAM, I recognized a fan on the cpu, which is out of function at the moment (I found out powering up the Snap after RAM-install) - anyone an idea (link) how to replace that one?

Im pretty sure on a 2000 or a 2200 there has been at least one person upgrading it to 4 drives

I believe requires a bios flag change, and then IDE cables with 3 IDE plugs

Yes - there was someone with a 2200 who successfully upgraded to 4 drives. But no reports on a successfull 2000 upgrade. Changing bios flags seemes to be a bit problematic and I don't want to brick the Snap.

A link about the fan would be nice - so I don't have do disassemble the thing right now. I hope I'm then able to find a similar fan somewhere here in germany since shipping from US is quite expensive.

The 2000 and 4000 use the same mb on the early model. Just put 2 drives on the IDE buss and see if it shows up. Change the BIOS flag may not be required.

The fan is temp controlled on most, 2 wires to MB. If I recall it has to get hot before it comes on.

Okay then - did some additional searching on power issues in this forum and the clue is: I'm not upgrading to 4 drives, because the standard Snap 2000 PSU won't be sufficiant to power 4 bigger drives (e.g. 4x 400 GB).

I found a PSU delivering enough power (I think) at a german shop (http://www.pollin.de/shop/detail.php...=Njk1OTc5&ts=0) at a reasonable price. But the PSU is too big to fit into my 1 HE 19'' housing I plan to use (if I also put 4 drives and the mainboard in there).

So I'll have a try and only upgrade with two bigger drives and hope the PSU will manage those and some additional fans I ordered to improve airflow in the 19'' housing.

A std 250w powersupply will be enough to power 4 drives. Move up to a 2U so you can use the larger fans for quiter operation.

Noise won't be a probleme since the device will be stored in a 6U 19'' rack under the stairs in our basement.

Also thought about a std. 250w PSU, but that won't fit into a 1U housing. Moving to a 2U unit is not an option right now.

Anyway I'm going to have a try with 4 little drives I've got laying around just to test if it's possibel, so I can upgrade to a stronger PSU and 4 drives anytime later if I need more disk space.

You can always go with notebook drives but they are more expensive, then you will need the 44 to 40 pin adapters.

Best sort of PSU, is if you can get say, one that switches and stuff use...

1U it's in englisch I think - in germany we say 1HE, it's the hight-unit of 19'' boxes (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/19-inch_rack). My english isn't fully adapted to tech slang at the moment, so maybe I just invent combinations of words that do not fit very well with the things I intend to say :).

I've got two PSU at home as spare parts for my Compaq KVM-Switch. They have +5 V/3 A, +12 V/2 A, -5 V/0,3 A - though the -5 V line is of course not needed for the snap. But 2A on the +12 V is not sufficiant enough when the hdds power up, as I learned from the forum. I just need more power on the +12V line.

Maybe I'm going to look into some of my older switches I don't need anymore and see if they have an appropriate PSU in there.

The other possibility would be the PSU I mentioned before. It has +5 V/23 A and +12 V/9 A and would fit into a 1U 19'' rack mount chassis concerning the height. But as I already said there won't be not enough place then for 4 drives.

Buying 2.5'' hdd isn't a cost effecitve solution I think. Are there any 400 GB 2.5'' hdds on the market anyway?

Small 1U power supplies capable of this are easily availalbe.

-or-

Get a power supply out of a 4100 (find a "for parts" unit on ebay).

A lot of the 2000 do use the same main board as the 4000, but not all. It would be, as mentioned previously, only a matter of changing a setting in the BIOS/CMOS.
