Snap 4100 - Can't access files in Windows Explorer

Firstly - thanks to all everyone who contributes here, especially the moderators - I must have read a 1,000 posts here, and so much has useful in understanding how these little baby servers work.

So, I have a problem and would be really grateful for some help. I can't access the files on a 4100 server in windows explorer (XP Pro) - but I can see them via the browser, and can copy/save them via http. I get an error in some sub-folders:

"T:\[location] refers to a location that is unavailable......"

I have a bunch of 4000's and 4100's and am in the process of upgrading them as I need to expand storage. I'll post the results of the upgrades to the database as they happen.

My problem is with the first server I had, a 4100:

Hardware: 2.2.1
OS: 3.4.805
Bios: 2.4.437
Memory: 64mb
Drives: 4x80Gb, Raid 5 = 224Gb

When I first set this up for web access, and set up secure access (https) but subsequently removed it. I also had plenty of file-user security but have removed all of that too now. Then I had this problem. It was running an earlier version of the OS, probably 803 when the files were saved. I've checked the disks and they are okay, and I've run a fault test and all is fine. I replaced the CPU fan and mobo battery, but haven't touched the memory.

That's about it - can post the logs if it's useful.
thanks
Jase

That error message means the user accessing that file does not have permission to either the share or file.

Check the security and share/file permissions.

If you do not want security (you said you removed it all), then top level give EVERYONE 'full access' on the shares, and give EVERYONE 'change' on the top level folders and use the 'apply to all directories and files' button so that the permissions propagate down.

Oh, I just had a thought too.

XP SP2 kb 885250 fubars the snap servers - you need to apply the Snap upgrade to fix.

"Description:
SnapOS 4.0.860 upgrade patch that resolve issues introduced by Microsoft KB885250 and issues with SMTP setting in SnapOS 4.0.084 and 4.0.085."

That only applies to v4 OS not v3.

The problem is permission related as previous said. If he is launching a mapped drive the source is not there.

blue68f100: It does apply to 3 also. I had the issue at work, and on XP sp 1 boxes we had to retract that patch. After flashing up the snap server to latest version 4 (for AD) I could then patch them again.

The bug produces the same symptoms, but it will be every file attempted to be opened in MSWord, Excel etc. not 'some files', so yes, this is a permission issue.

Thanks for the feedback - I did reset the access permissions on the server, and thought I'd reset the access permissions on the files, but I'll double check tonight - I don't remember seeing an option to reset "on all files and folders" so maybe I missed something.

thanks!

Nick, blue - thanks again - works fine now. I must have not reset all the file permissions.

Great job guys - thanks!

I've got 4x 250Gb and 4x320Gb Hitachi's arriving this weekend so will put them in 2 4000's and do a head-to-head - will also include a 4100 - and test read/write speeds, now that I understand that the 4100s may be no quicker than the 4000s.

But the strange thing is, I use WinXP Pro SP2 (with all the updates) and a number of SNAP servers using both v3.4.805/7 and v4.0.860 and I have never seen this problem once.

See David? It is like they read my mind or know what I have been doing behind the scenes.

FYI, I just gave a rundown on speeds for the various RAIDs and 4000 and 4100 to David in e-mail. Also proved that FTP access is faster than say a mapped share in Windows Explorer.

Yes, it was with XP sp1 and that patch the issues arose - all the XP sp2 boxes where OK.

But the lastest SnapOS fixes it.

Seems to me then, that the right fix it to update to SP2... Just a thought...

If only life was that simple when 200 boxes at the time was on sp1 and you only have two people in the IT Dept. It was easier to back out the patch and blackmark it. Remember the upgrade from sp1 -> sp2 upgrade broke a lot of stuff. A machine with installed sp2 from the start was OK.

Now I upgraded the SnapOS over Xmas for AD, I reapplied the patch to all machines of 500.
