Ubuntu Linux

One of my IT counterparts at another location in my company claims that he loaded Ubuntu Linux on his snap server because he was unsatisfied with SnapOS. He never built a web interface, so it was all command line. He claims you can install it on embedded devices. Has anyone else tried this? I don't dare mess with either of my two production servers.

Here's a transcript of what he said to me via email.

I so unhappy w/ SnapOS.... I loaded Ubuntu Linux on it instead.

You can flash linux on any embedded device. You may have to solder the TSOP to open the bridge to the flash ram... I didn't have to on my 4200.

I do have more options, but I'm limited to the size of the flash mem. It was merely a project I started awhile back, so I never did a nice web interface... it's all shell(like dos prompt). I use linux on a daily basis, so I more comfortable w/ shell sceens.

I mainly wanted it to have AD support. Samba fixed this prob, so when password change it's changed as well.

The 4200's and similar are the ones that you can set up monitors and stuff on them...

We believed it be possible to reflash it to some other os, just wasnt sure how. But we have had people putting cd drives on it and getting other OS's going

As a side point... Why Ubuntu...?

Um, I have no clue why he chose Ubuntu. Never heard of it until he mentioned it.

The 4200, 4400, 4500 have a std BIOS with WatchDog. You just need to disable the watchdog and you can load most any thing on them.

Whe ie chose what he did, that's his choice. he may have had a v2 OS, which may be why. Did not want to pay for a update. If I recall youn had to be at version 2.6 for AD support.

Its quite popular

But generally for people starting off on linux

I found it to be quite bloated, and i wouldnt use it for a server....

But meh

Ubuntu Is a great desktop linux distro. I run it on my laptop. And you can slim it down nicely for a server too. You just have to remove all the Xorg stuff which can be a pain. Debian's package managment makes it REALLY easy to make a server fairly hands-free. But. As far as setting it up on a Snap or other NAS device i really don't see the point unless you're trying to do more with it then file storage. You can certainly get a standard 1U server for cheaper than a Snap 4500.

Well, I do have SOME clue, but being a hardware guy, that clue only goes so far.
