Dell 715N vs Snap4400 Guardian OS
 

I'm working on trying to get a Dell 715N to boot the Guardian OS. All of the pictures, indicate these units are identical. I need a dump/capture (from com port) to see what is missing in the Dell. I think it is missing a ID in the BIOS or PIC chip. Just need one to compare to. Also is the 4400 using the Storage Works chip/bios?

I can help here the 4400 does indeed use the storage works chip. its located after the ram slots.

If i can dig up a cable i can give you more info but right now im transfering large amounts of data to it.


Anyone know if you can load a program on to the 4400? Id really like to load my media software to it and have it run local on the snap.

I don't think so, unless it's a snap extension. You may beable to by setting up a www server, using JVM for control. JVM is the way the Snap Extension interface with.

I store my music on my snap (2200) and set the software (iTunes) to share it. I then used a mapped drive (m:) pointing to the snap share. Can play my collection from any pc.

id like to run this http://wizd.sourceforge.net/ naitive on my devices (3 4400's) but if thats not possible ill opt on buying a max attach 4300 or a powervault 725

I just ripped apart my storage areas looking for my null cable and cant find it (as usual) Ill have to buy one in the next day or so then i can screen dump the 4400 for you.

In the mean time would pictures of the sys board help while i have my server open and lying on the floor?

Well depending on which OS version you are at. The Guardian OS is RedHat Linux or Gentoo. You would be required to SSH into the kernel to make changes. But I would bet Snap has the kernel locked down pretty tight.

You better recheck whats compatable with wizd.

Detailed pictures would help. In particular the ID marking on the chips.

All my 4400's are at 4.1.106 would like to get to the latest but i dont have it :(

I thought the os would be locked down pretty tight but i am curious if anyone (the 3 of us playing with guardian os's) has accomplished it yet.

I have the linux code for wizd, so far its only compatable with what ever its been tried with. The biggest being Win/Mac/Linux i believe its been ported to unix also.
It even runs on a linksys device (unslung)

It wont be ported to something unless you try it ya know. It would be great for me and the wizd community if it could be ported to the snap 4400's and higher.

So far the only NAS that runs wizd is infrant's readynas I have a beta box with the OS on a CF card. maybe its time to pull it and take a peek.


Anyway i will take detailed hi rez photos for you and post them. no problem.

Webboy, turn on SSH under the server settings. Then use putty or WinSCP3 to connect. The browse around and you will see it is basicly like any other Linux. If you see something under the /etc directory you like, copy it to a /hd/share so you can view later.

So you haven't managed to blow up my 715n yet? Nice. If guardian will not work i may just toss it on ebay since i really dont want to run Windows 2000 Storage Server.

Seems the entire os is locked down cant copy a file to the partition.

Can you copy a file from it. Copying files to it is a little different. The OS is spread across 4 drives (raid1), and most are read only.

Did you make yourself a "su -" ??

What I had to do was go through the /hd/vol_mnt* to find out what mnt point was for which shares. Then I coped the config files (*.conf) using "cp /etc/*.conf /hd/vol_mnt0/"

Putty is what worked here WinSCP3 failed for some reason.

Hallis, Looking at the chips, it appears the Dell 715N does not have a Server Works chip set. Unless it's under one of the labels.

If i recall correctly doesn't the dell use the intel chip set?
Its been a long time since i was under the hood of a dell 715/725.
I think there more similar with the maxtor max attach's.

Are the drive trays the same on the 715n and the 4400? What hdd drive interface do they take? (ide?)

Don't know, but all of the internal look the same except the ServerWorks Chip sets. Yes they are IDE

They are not the same as the 4500's. The sleds are ~ 1/2" longer. The PN for the Dell 715N sled: DS/N US-07J561-48593-25H-0651.

Attached are photos compairing the 4400 to the 4500. The 4500 has a small "U" to one side and shorter.

Is there a fan on the cpu heatsink? Can someone take a picture of the inside of the 4400?

Yes there is, The Dell uses a copper while Snap used Al heat sink.

Yeah, lucky man. My old 4400 is still usign 2.1.003 (Software Version) and I wonder if any of you have a clue about how I can upgrade it.

You won't like the answer. Yes, but very expensive. About $600 from Adaptec.

As far as lucky, well, I wish I had your 4400 to back up my 4500. :D

Can someone tell me what memory their 4400 is running, I have one stick of 512, ecc, reg pc100 here, wondering if that will work or if I need pc133

The dell 715N is using PC133 EEC ram, if that helps.

Na, it's all good. I will stick with my 4500. :D I just want an inexpensive backup for the 4500. Another 4500 or a 4200 would be ideal, but a 4400 would do in a pinch. Besides, I would never dislike someone just because of their hardware. I can usually find much more petty reasons... lol
