Snap 4100 and Micro$oft Windows Vista
 

I've looked through the posts and cannot seem to find an answer to this. If there is an existing thread somewhere, can someone post a link to it?

Whenever I create a new folder on my snap 4100 (4.0.860) using Windows Vista, windows creates hundreds of new folders and I have to ctrl-alt-del to stop it. I've been getting around this by creating the new folder on my desktop and copying it to the server, but I hate work-arounds. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem? Thanks.

Dang. Sounds like the solution would be to use XP instead of Vista. :(

Thanks for the answer. You probably still think that MSDOS 6.2.2 is for young whipper-snappers.

I'm running XP on four of my computers and Vista on one of them. We can only hide from Vista for so long before we have to adopt it or give up and move to the woods. I don't like the Redmond monster any more than everyone else, but it is what it is. As an early adopter and business user, I prefer to find solutions for the future instead of longing for the past.

This is not a flame, just frustration.

Move to Guardian OS (dump the 4100)... :doh:


As for Vista; I think XP will survive longer than most gloom and doom people think. Also, there are alternatives, like OSX, which is moving up the ranks. Or, a bazillion renditions of Unix and Linux. I will stick with XP Pro for now, and see what the future holds.


I do have to tell you, and no harm intended here, but you were a bit hypocritical in your last message, but I understand your frustration at the reply you received when looking for help. These are your words. Yet you are trying to squeeze more use out of an outdated NAS and SNAP OS. I submit to you that your words apply to NAS units as well as a desktop/notebook OS. Now keeping this in mind, here is the answer to your question, as best I can tell you.

SNAP OS has issues with Vista (and some OSX stuff also). Even the newest version is outdated, being over 2 years old. Adaptec has indicated it is no longer going to update the SNAP OS, thus making it a dead OS in effect. Why? Because their current units (and have been for some time) use a far superior Guardian OS. So, to the best of my knowledge, and to use your words, "it is what it is". I hope someone has found a better workaround for you, but don't expect much. SNAP OS with Vista is known to have "issues" and it is not going to be corrected, at least at this time, according to Adaptec.


Again, I do not mean to be harsh or critical, but it seemed the best way to get the message across. Sorry, but it is what it is, and it is time to move to a Guardian unit, just like it was time for you to move to Vista.

Sigh. Thank you Phoenix32, as that summed up my thoughts very well. There are many alternatives to the older 4100s, including the newer Adaptec units. Personally, I prefer hardware RAID cards in Windows Server 2003 because I don't have to spend a lot of effort (time) to get a large jump in reliability. I really don't like Microsoft, but in my use cases, they ... just ... work.

Oh, and I am running Vista in 50% of my systems. The other two are MCE2005 and Win2k3. Remote directory access works just fine in all the permutations here.

Maybe I should fire up my CP/M machine though, to test for interoperability? :D
