Fan rpm signals of video cards and water cooling

Can you just disconnect a video card fan with its rpm signals and put on a water cooling block without problems ? Does the card not protest when it looses its fan rpm signals ?

It usually works just fine. I say usually, because it has worked in all the cases I have tried, but there may be a card that it wouldn't work upon.

Were these video cards with 2 pin fan connectors ? The one I'm looking at has a 4 pin connector...

Unplug the fan and start the computer and see if video comes up. If it does your good to go and turn the comp off and re-plug it in. If no video then probably will not work. As long as the heat sink is attached you won't fry the card. If worried point a fan at the card during the test.

Pretty good chance the 4 pins are for RPM monitoring for voltage adjustment so the card can turn the fan down and up as needed. My Radeon X1950Pro runs at 40% most of the time for example.

It seems to work. I get video from the card even though there is no tach signal from the fan. The video card is a MSI nVidia GeForce 7900GTX, it is a while ago I started setting this up. Unfortunately I have problems with my processor waterblock, the seating was off because of the pull on the tubes leading to the video card. so i have to re-seat my processor and see if it fixes the freezes I have been getting. :hammer:
