Possible algae/bacteria

I know this has been discussed long time ago but my question is reserved to what I have and what should I use of them to counter possible algae growth.

Today I inspected water in my loop and once I opened the resevior cap, there came a foul smell. There is sort of (ver little though) crystal formed on the inside edge of the reservior.

Ok so here is what I have in home to counter the 'attack'

a) Listrin
b) potassium permanganate
c) anti biotics fit for human consumption
d) Iodine (will have to by it from medical store)

What should I use?

Ok no replies... I have added Listrin. Listrin foams up, I am not sure if it kills any microorganisms. It did remove the odor.

The strange thing is when I flushed the loop (with clear water), I saw white scalps similar to algae but white in color. It was sticking on edges of the reservoir (just above the water level). Somewhat slimy, slippery to touch. What is this?

I've used 30% to 50% antifreeze. No algae has ever grown in one of those systems.

Brains256,

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure if this white stuff was algae, just the odor made be flush out and take some action. Your use of anti freeze idea seems good since diluted antifreeze comes in distilled water. I have a gallon of FUCHS 40% and LLC 30% antifreeze. Both are based on Mono Ethylene Glycol.

I was using 10% LLC coolant (added water to LLC-30%), and then I noticed this strange odor (few months later). All was fine when I was not using any coolant... just plain water.

Does anti freeze have anti bacterial properties? Need I to worry about microbial growth ever?
