SnapServer 2000 reliability question

My SnapServer 2000 has two 120 Gb drives, configured for RAID-1 disk-mirroring. If one of the drives fail I would be okay but I am wondering what I would do if the SnapServer fails for whatever reason. Would I be able to install the working drives into a computer running some flavor of Linux and still have access to my data?

How reliable are these SnapServers, especially now that they are not brand new units? I'm estimating my EBay purchased unit is approx. 6 or 7 years old now and I cannot tell how much 'mileage' it has had.

Thanks.

Re: SnapServer 2000 reliability question

You can not read the HD in any PC. Only a Snap can read a snapos. So backups are still required as with any system. This protects against MB Failures.

The first thing I do is replace the fans. These are the first items to fail. Then check the date on the HD's. Then you have an idea of how much life is left in them.

These are interprise class units, so there better than 95% of the stuff that is out there for public use. It's harder on the units cycling them on and off. If you run your unit on a UPS to protect against power surges and improper shutdown helps extend the life.

I recommend that you fail a HD and go through the process of replacing it. So you will not be in panic mode when it happens. If you keep these long enough you will have a failure.
