2 failed drives in SNAP 4500
Hello all,
I am new to SNAP servers and the discussion board, but I did not find a solution to my problem. We have a 4500 at work with (4) 250 GB drives. Two of the drives failed. One was apparently completely out of commission as it was no longer showing up. The other was listed as unable to read. Our IT guys replaced the drives and now we can log in but the data is gone. I don't think our IT guys did anything beyond physically installing the drives. Is there something more we can do to recover data, or is there even a chance with 2 drives failed? I'm still unsure why the system was not set to send an email in the event of a drive failure. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. -Shawn |

With a RAID 5 configuration using 4 drives, you can loose 1 drive and not loose data. If you loose 2 the Array is lost. There is not enough parity data to rebuild the array. Your only solution is a Recovery Service.
This Apply to ALL RAID 5 Arrays. If you have a 7 disk array 2 drives can be lost. This is where the use of Snap10 exp is used. It can house Global Spares. So soon as a drive has failed it will automaticaly picked up and start the rebuild. This gives a Storage unit and operators more time to replace failed drives. |
