Reasons for a corrupt OS on two 1100's
 

Greetings,
I have recently recovered from two crashes on two seperate 1100, at two different sites. After purchasing new HD's for both units, I tested one drive and it came out fine.

I used Maxtor's tools in the deep scan that supposedly ensures the drive is as new, if it pases. It did. I am in the process of testing the drive again with SpinRite, at level 5.

My question would be, does anyone know why a SNAP OS would crap, yet the drive test O.K ?

The Snap OS is timmed sensitive. So if a cmd does not happen with in parameters it reports and error. SpinRite in Maintance mode will fully check the media for bad sectors and seek times. I know on 1 Seagate drive I had it was terrible. SpinRite was able to cleanup the bad sectors but it still has a bad seek time.

But most crashes are power related, are your units on UPS's?

One was, one wasn't. The funny thing is that the one that wasn't crashed twice, once last year and now this time. Both times, it was after powering down, relocating the unit and restarting. I powered it down both times from within the SNAP web interface. Both times I transported it in my car.

I have transported MANY drives, PC's, etc in my car, and never had this issue before. Odd...

I guess I now have two extra 250MB drives now! :D

What mfg HD's are you using????

Maxtors are the worst..... Highest failure rate in the industry.

Sorry, lost track of this thread...they were maxtors...these were both the OEM drives from SNAP.

Adaptec switched to Maxtor in a attempt to save money and generate revenue for their service dept. SnapAppliance use to use WD and Hatachi, which any thing is better than a Maxtor. Seagate bought maxtor for a low cost OEM drive, that way they were not forced to drop the price on the Better Seagates.

It almost sound like you have a bad drive to fail on a scheduled shutdown. I would replace the maxtors while you can still transfer the OS off of them. Then deep six the maxtors. I use SpinRite on all new drives, on a regular basis to keep them running smooth.

Thanks for the tips. I knew that Seagate had purchased Maxtor, but didn't know that this now their "bargain" line. I have replaced both drives with WD Caviars.
