Existing NAS 4000 user with questions
 

I bought this NAS 4000 server from eBay and it has served me well for over three years, so far. I do have the following info:
Software: 2.3.417 (US)
Hardware: 2.0.1
Bios: 2.0.282

I have the following questions:
1. What is the key difference between the 4000 and 4100 (aside from the size 2U vs 1U)?
2. Are most of the 4100 website pages (in the Adaptec site) applies for the 4000? The 4000 seems to have disappeared as soon as they came out with 4100.
3. What do I need to do to get the version 3 and then version 4?
4. Do I need SnapOS Version 4 since all I have is a simple user network at home?
5. How much time do I need to allocate to upgrade the SnapOS?
6. Aside from the backup, what other requirements do I need to upgrade?
7. I currently have 84G in Raid5 configuration. That mean I have 4x120 Gig - how can I verify that without opening up the machine?
8. Lately I also see from the logs:
Should I worry about it?

Apologies for a lot of question. This is the first time in years I had some time to review my configuration. Thank you in advance for your help.

Welcome to the ProoCooling Forum, Snap Threads.

I would suggest that you read the FAQ's and the WIKI info on the snap servers.

In general 4000 are upgradable to 1T, where the 4100 does not support LBA48bit addressing, max <137gig HD's. Provided you have the proper OS. Adaptec will send you a link on request for v3.4.807 (last free v) if you ask them nicely.

If you run "co de info" from debug will tell you drive info. If you upgrade to v3, I recommend that you do a total reinit of the drives. Due to the fact that v2 -3&4 calculate the starting point of the drives differently. If you ever have a drive failure this will bite you if not done.

V4 had a lot of bug fixes and fully compatiable with XP. You may or may not run into them. Personally V4 is the only way to go, runs smoother than v3. Since you are on v2 you will need to do the upgrade using assist. An any case NEVER USE MORE THAN 90% OF Available SPACE.

I just acquired a Snap with the following specs.

Software Hardware Serial# BIOS
2.2.393 2.0.1 302117 2.0.252

I cannot find the link to upgrade my firmware to 3.4.8 so I can run the larger drives. It doesn't appear to be in the Administration section.

No, no you misunderstand. I have the upgrade file. I cannot find the area in the existing software to upgrade it.

v2 must be done through Assist. You will be prompted to put the unit into FLUP. Done the same way as a reset but 5 blinks. Make sure you have your screen saver not set and make sure you keep the browser on the progress page and do not allow it to time out. If it does backup to the orig page soon as possiable. If you are on the wrong page when the snap try to updat the progress it will fail.

If you have a Win98 use it other wise XP should work. Use IE not FF for this one.

I'm not sure what you mean by Assist? How do I get there? Any existing tutorials or Howto's?

Assist is a program that is used to locate and do the initial setup on these SnapOS units. If you were to reset to factory your IP changes to 0.0.0.0 With this IP you will not find it on your network. Snap wrote this utility to use a special protocol that they wrote to find these units. Comes on the CD that comes with the units.

In most cases Adaptec will provide it to you on request.

If your received a zip file with the OS, sometimes it's included along with JVM and S2S. The zip file is approx 18 meg.
