Replace Drive on 1100 Snap Appliance
 

I'm trying to replace the 160GB drive on my snap server with a 320GB drive.

I've following the instructions in the wiki but I still have the drive and power lights blinking in tandem. What I've done so far is this:

Installed original drive as primary master on a pc
Installed new drive as primary slave on pc
Copied drive to drive via Digital Dolly ( took 26 hours )
Copied boot sector
Re-installed new drive in snap ( changed jumper back to master )

Still have lights blinking in tandem.

I tried pressing the reset 4 times but it did nothing.

I tried connecting to the snap via web browser

I tried connection to the snap via utility on snap CD but it cannot find the snap on the network.

PLEASE help.

Ok, I found the following instructions. Apperently I was trying to reset the server incorrectly.

For example, if you pressed Reset three times to clear the network settings, the Disk light should flash three times repeatedly to confirm the reset. If the number of flashes exceeds the number you intended, repeat steps 4 and 5 of this procedure. 6 When the light confirms the level of reset you intended, press and hold down the Reset button until both the System and Disk lights turn off, and then release the Reset button. The server then restarts, and resets the settings you cleared to the factory defaults

After I did this the snap utility still cannot locate the server on the network and now the lights are blinking in tandem with power blinking once and disk blinking twice about every second.

Doing a factory reset , sets the ip to 0.0.0.0. You now are required to use Assist to do the initial setup. The 1x2 led pattern inidcates it did not find the OS. Using dd to copy the complete is not necessary. If you were changing drive size the markers are wrong requiring a format after the unit is up. So your data you were trying to save will be lost.

Assist can be had from addaptec on request, but ask them nicely. They are very moody people.

I would recheck to make sure you have the hd jumpers set correctly. Some hd need master/single drive. Some work with CS, and some do not work at all. Has something is the way snap handles the EIDE interface.

You may want to re-install your hd till you get the network set backup.

By this you mean the application on the Adaptec CD correct?

I'm not overy concerned with the data on the disk being lost, so should I just try to image the drive again but only let it copy about 3% this time?

Also, one thing that I noticed is that the fan was not turning at all. I rebooted a couple times and tried spinning the fan up by hand but nothing.

I checked the voltage on the wire going to the fan and got nothing. NO voltage at all going to the fan. Is this normal? Is the fan temp controlled or something?

The fan is controlled by the firmware/OS. On 1x00 cover the area between the back of the drive and back. Failure not to do so will overheat the unit.

The application (Assist) on the CD will locate the snap and allow you to set the IP. You may need to re install your original HD to set the IP.

You do not need to copy the whole drive. Just the 1st 25-30 meg, RAW Copy. Read the FAQ's It should answers most of your questions.

If the unit is not in the enclosure the 1x00 models will over heat. If you have it out there is a ~1" gap between the HD and back of the snap enclosure. If this is not covered the cooling fan will not startup. Due to the placement of the sensor it will not see the heat.

Is the sensor in the fan? I was thinking of replacing the fan.

Ok, pulling my hair out now. Honestly, I'm not a dumb ass, but I cannot figure out why this isn't working.

1) Installed original drive in pc as primary master

2) Installed new drive in pc as primary slave

3) Used Digital Dolly to copy 3% of RAW data from original drive to new drive

4) Installed ORIGINAL drive into SNAP and setup IP address via "Assist" application as 192.168.2.150

5) Removed original drive from SNAP

6) Installed new drive into SNAP

7) Attempted to connect to new drive via "Assist" application

8) Attempted to connect to new drive via http://192.168.2.150/config

9) Attempted to connect to new drive via http://192.168.2.150/config/debug

10) Attempted to connect to new drive via http://SNAP214400/config

11) Attempted to connect to new drive via http://SNAP214400/config/debug

NO connection attempts worked.

If I put the original drive back in then the SNAP works like a champ.

Also what led pattern are you getting?

What mfg drive are you using?

Use the mfg utility to do a quick erase of the HD. Only copy 25-40 meg using the block size and count option on dd.

The temp sensor is on the MB.

WOW! Thanks for all of your help. I finally got it working!

As it turns out, I am a dumb ass....hehe

When I was using DD ( first time user ) on the screen that asks you to select the destination drive, I was using the arrow keys to go down and select the drive, but I never hit the space bar to actually select it. When I did do it correctly, I let it copy 1% of the drive and then put the new one in the SNAP and viola worked like a charm!

As for the fan, after it sat for a while running with the top of the box on, I caught the fan kicking on. It only runs for about 30 seconds and then shuts off again. I'm just shocked that it lets the drive and inside of the SNAP get as warm as it does before it kicks on.

It starts in the 150F range. It does not take much to to rewire so it runs 24/7.

I have a similar problem, but no good drive to start with. Long story short, original drive head crash, not able to extract anything from drive. Bought a virgin drive, but unable to connect via assist. Getting 1x2 blinking lights, net light is on, Tried resetting unit, but nothing changes. Help!!!

You need to find an image file from a snap server to put onto your new drive.
