Snap Server 4500 OS Upgrade Issue
I have a snap server 4500 which I am trying to update the OS from 4.2 to 4.4. Everytime I attempt the upgrade through the GUI I get a 500 server error. I went the Adaptec knowledge base and it said you need at least 200MB of available space to upgrade the OS. To find out how much space you you are suppose to type df -h / from the http://yoursnapserver/admin/debug.cgi screen. Below is the result I got.
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/md100root 529M 412M 117M 78% / Could this be why I can't upgrade the OS. If so how do I fix it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |
Re: Snap Server 4500 OS Upgrade Issue
Looking at those numbers you only have 117meg free. Looks like you need to do some house cleaning. Time to back stuff off.....
As a rule of thumb It's not a good idea to fill a storage system up over 90%. Time to see about installing some larger HD's, and retiring your 160's. |
Re: Snap Server 4500 OS Upgrade Issue
Reboot the unit (a clean power off reboot) and then try. Also, turn off (disable) any of the extras you might have running (like the CA AV). Once you have done that, try again.
If that don't work, try adding some memory (PC2100 ECC Reg DDR). If that don't work, force it into recovery mode and try there. If that don't work, then come grab me in e-mail and we will see what we can do (no, I am not free of charge for this type work). |
Re: Snap Server 4500 OS Upgrade Issue
Andy,
He has too much data on the HD, :hammer: needs to clean house..... to free up space. :D He may beable to gain space depending on how he use using SnapShots... Def is 20% of the HD. Cutting it back to 5% would release some back. |

Damn, I hate it when this happens.
Sorry David, I have to correct you on this one. It is not about available HD space. It's about memory space. Here is a screen shot example from a 4400 with 220.97 GB free hard disk space (out of 1TB) running that command. Compare it to his original post... |
Re: Snap Server 4500 OS Upgrade Issue
I will disagree with you on this one. It needs 200meg of HD space to unpack the gsu. Now I don't know if it's with its Guardian OS Partitions or user data.

Re: Snap Server 4500 OS Upgrade Issue
From what I have been able to determine, it is from the OS partition. But their own database says to use that command, which shows memory, not HD space.
My guess is, if he follows what I told him to do, it will work. Either that, or there is something wrong with the unit. But cleaning up a little user space never hurts either. Funny, we have not heard back from him yet as to how much user space was available etc... |
Re: Snap Server 4500 OS Upgrade Issue
If it's from his partition, his log file may need to be cleared out. I do not remember if there is a limit on the db size. But this should not grow very fast unless some type of problem, and or a lot of retarts. It could even be caused by hackers trying to breakin, this generates a lot of logs, I know this from experience. If he's using the 4500 as DHCP server, this may also generate logs.
The guardian os is designed very well. It is very hard to believe that Snap/Adaptec would shipped a unit without enough ram to do a upgrade. The lower 4200 were shipped with less ram and have no problems. |
Re: Snap Server 4500 OS Upgrade Issue
Thanks for your suggestions. I will try them and let you know what happens. FYI. There is nothing currently stored on this snap server. It has been configured as a RAID 5 array. There are no volumes or shares configured on it.
Thank you |
Re: Snap Server 4500 OS Upgrade Issue
If it fails again, log in as root/admin not a user with admin rights and see if that helps.
