Snap 4100 data recovery
I have a Snap Server 4100 that has not been used in a while. Today I booted it up to transfer the data to a different server. It powered on, but could not be found on the network. I tried resetting the unit to no avail. Then I unplugged it, and plugged it back in. I tried to power up, and it started, then stopped within about 5 seconds. I retried this several times, and each time it did the same thing. Finally, it would not power at all. I am assuming it is a failed power supply?
I saw the FAQ that said you can only recover the data from a same type unit. My question is - does it have to be EXACTLY the same model? For example, mine is a 4100. Can I purchase a 4000 (which would be cheaper) to move my drives and transfer the data? Any other suggestions? Anyone wanting to selling a 4100/4000 for cheap? thanks, elaine |
Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
Must be the same unit and the same OS. There was a change in the way snap calculated the starting point of the drives between v3 & V4.
Do you know what OS version you were setting at. The flashram units can not be rolled back without factory software. |
Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
As I mentioned earlier - I haven't used the snap for over a year. As I recall, I had the most recent Snap OS before the last paid update.
I know before Adaptec took over SNAP you used to be able to login and it tracked what version you had - but I don't know if this exists anymore. I do have the original CDs, documents, etc - the unit has actually had very low use. So I am assuming I had the last V3 OS - because I know I didn't do the last paid update. Are you saying that I would have to get a 4100 with V3 - or would a 4000 with V3 also work? thanks, elaine |
Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
Must be a 4100 with v3 OS. 3.4.803-807 was the last free updates. It's possiable a upgrade OS will not cause any problems. But, I do know there is a problem with the upgrade OS if you have a drive failure.
If I recall there is a fuse on the 4100 PS. Maybe you just blew a fuse. I think it is a std 1U PS 250W. Get the model # off the PS. And check for fuses, may need to open the case. It's been sever years since I have powered mine up. Re-reading your original post, I think the PS may still be good, just kicked off on overload. The inrush current on starting HD's are a lot higher than most think. It's possiable that one drive is stuck and want spin up. If you don't mind trying a few things. Mark the drives 1-4 (left to right) to ensure the order does not get mixed up. Remove the power from all drives. With the power removed see if the 4100 will come on line. You should beable to access the admin pages without any HD's. If the led's light up the PS may still be good. I would then remove the drives and connect them to a PC power supply, DO NOT CONNECT THE IDE CABLE. And make sure they will spin up. Let them spin for several minutes to get the greese moving again. Do this for every drive. I think 1 may be stuck, I've seen this many times on equipment thats run 24/7. Now if the 4100 booted with no HD's installed, install the drives back into the 4100 in the same order removed. Then try to power the 4100 back on. The hardware is different between the 4000 and 4100., even though their both are flashram models. If you were just wanting to reuse the drives I would say yes, but if the data is a must have I say no. The 4000 have a bad reputation for having weak PS. How much data is on the drives, not being used in over a year. If you concern about someone accessing the data, you can removes the drives to a pc and use an eraser program to whip the drives. |
Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
I was able to move drives between a 4100 and 4000 (and keep data).
BUT! The drives must be in the proper order and the unit being used must have the same or higher SNAP OS installed. And! With that said, if it does not work for you, and the OS mounts the drives, the data will be gone, gone, gone (RAID blown). DO NOT do this unless you have no other choice or the data is not important. Yes, I was able to do it, but yes, I also had some blown arrays also. Don't bank on it. |
Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
Thanks for the replies....
- I checked the fuse (inside the power supply) and it looks good - I tried powering up after disconnecting the power from the drives, to no avail I am assuming these are good indicators that the power supply is bad. I am wondering if one of the drives was indeed sticking, and this 'surge' caused the power supply to go bad. Or... it could have just been time. I guess my next step is to either purchase another power supply - or send the drives in for data recovery. Other than what I am experiencing - the unit is mint. I am thinking it might be worth 'restoring' - hopefully all it needs is the power supply... thanks for all of the help! elaine |

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=150130155152 although you may want to ask the seller to make sure it comes without the on/off switch. The switch makes it impossible to fit it into the case, unless you mod the case. |
Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
Probably cheaper to buy a 4100 on eBay than a power supply for it... Plus then you get spare parts....

Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
No, but this buys you a proper power supply for the 4100, not something that might not work... And gets you a bunch of spare parts..

Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
I will sell my working 4100 for $130 + SH , NO DRIVES , v4.0.860 Firmware. MB has the mods done so it supports 240+gig configuration. I have tested this unit with 4 400gig HD's. Drives were clamped in the 130gig range as it should. Comes with rack mounts. If I recall the cpu cooling fan was a little noisey. I have not used this unit since I got my 4500 up and running.

Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
There ya go, looks like a good idea to me...

Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
I had already purchased a power supply when the post was made for the unit for sale ...
Anyway - I received the power supply today, and installed it. It now powers up - so looks like that was *part* of the problem. I cannot locate it on the network. I have reset it several times to no avail. Any ideas? thanks, elaine |
Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
If you did a reset to factory, you need to run Assist to locate and do the initial setup.

Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
hmmm... Snap Assist can't seem to find it either. Any ideas?
thanks, elaine |
Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
Verify the cable and port your using is good. If so possiable bad system board. Is the LED's on the front panel indicating drives net link ....
|
Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
I have tried connecting it on my network, and off the network (directly to one computer). When on the switcher, the LED on the switcher lights up, indicating it is seeing something.
When starting up the SNAP, the disk lights light up in succession. When it has powered up, the System light 'flutters', Link light is steady, Net light goes off and on every couple of seconds, and bottom Disk light never comes on (I assume it would only come on if it was being written too?) thanks, elaine |
Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
It sounds like it has been reset to factory. What verison of Assist are you using? 802, 803, v4 they called it different names at times.
That or the sub net is not in your subnet. I would follow the instructions in the wiki and FAQ's and rest the snaps Network settings only. You can reset all, will not hurt, either way will require Assist to do the initial setup. If I recall v3 assist still worked on v4 os. |
Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
I am using Assist 2.0.299.0? Is there a newer version that might work better?
It really doesn't make much sense. The unit powers up perfect. The LEDs are lighting correctly. The network switch shows that it is a valid connection. It just can't be found. I think the SNAP is running one of the last versions of v3. I don't think I ever updated it to 4. I tried resetting just the network settings, and still got the same problem. They sure made it difficult the access.... thanks, elaine |
Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
There are several newer version of Assist. Contact Adaptec on a email request and they generally provide a link where you can download it.
The newer SnapServer Manager that ships with the Guardian OS Units will also work. Updated info: Doing a full reset will not damage or change and of the drive configuration. It only clears the IP, admin PW, and Language sets. Sometines it takes several trys to clear it. Make sure you use the procedure in the FAQ's or wiki. There has been a procedure floating around on the www that is not correct. |
Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
I have done a reset....using the SnapOS FAQ's ...Now what do I do?
I cleared all system setting (four times)..... After viewing some other questions I need to Use assist.... Im unsure of how to to this entirely.... I don't think that I even have assist... How do i get to the admin page??? Point your browser to "http://ipaddress/config" or "http://Snap#####/config" (###### = Serial No.) what does this mean..... |
Re: Snap 4100 data recovery
If you reset the snap to factory, the IP is 0.0.0.0 . Assist is a program that Snap wrote to look for there hardware and allow you to set the IP address for your network. Once the IP is set you can login to the admin page and start the setup.
Contact Adaptec's email support and kindly request a copy of Assist. Tell them the unit was reset and need it to do the initial setup. They have 2 version PC & Mac. They should send you a link for download. Or if you have a larger guardian OS unit, the utility SnapServerManger will work too. |

The unit will also use DHCP if you have a server on your network.... |
