4500 failed RAID5
 

I have a snap server 4500 running OS version 2.6.050. One of the drives failed, so I powered the server down, replaced the drive, and started it back up. Under status/devices the new drive no longer shows as failed but the RAID5 set is still showing failed. I can't find any documentation on how to reinitialize the drive manually. I saw the wiki on this website, but it looks like the OS version may be newer than mine because the commands do not work. Any assistance is appreciated.

I'll see if I can help. I went through something about the same but I was just trying to put in larger drives. I was also running Guardian OS v3.0.

Under the raid sets in the storage screen, can you click on the name of the raid set? Mine was named "md0". On the right side under Actions, there was a button for repair. Click on repair and it should bring that drive back into the set. It will have to restripe and it will read as a hot spare untill its done but it should come back online when the resync is done.

I guess another thing to ask, is the new drive that you've installed a similar capacity or larger than the old one? Does it also have similar drive characteristics as the old one ( rotational speed, access times, things like that )? If the specs are too differant, it may have an effect on overall performance. Just a thought.

The Guardian OS is design to be hot swapped. If you were you to hot swapped the HD it would have auto resync. But once the hd has a file structure you must use the menus to do a manual resysnc.

I can access the RAID set screen and can click on the the set, md0. It is labeled in Red as "Failed". There is no repair button.

All 4 drives are 160GB, 2 are Maxtor and 2 are Western Digital.

I have searched all through the web interface and I cannot find the option to resync manually. Where is it?

Make the new drive a "spare" and it should recover...

Ok sorry to sound like a newbie, but how do I do that? I've read through some of the help screens within the web interface and from what I can see you cannot "add a spare" to a RAID 5 set. :uhh:

Ok, Go to the storage tab, then select Raid sets. The def is md0, click on it and the drives will show up related to that set. There you have the option to make the unused drive a spare. Once you do this it may take several minutes before the resync starts, so be patient.

If you have problem with that. Remove the drive you just installed. Take it to a pc and do a quick format with the mfg utility. Now you can HOT SWAP the drive and it will auto resysnc.

Remember. The Guardian OS units are design to be repair without taking them off line. So try to alway hotswap the drives. If you only want to transfer the OS to another drive, power down to install drives.
