Ben's new server (Project)
Well its time my old tired 800 MHz shit server be retired and a new one in place! I have some parts and am buying others and yes, it will be liquid cooled ;)
Motherboard: Tyan Thunder K7 Memory: 4x 256 MB for a total 1 GB (DDR 200) CPUs: Don't have em yet. I'm cheap so I can't afford Athlon MPs and will just mod some XPs. Power: I'll find something... Storage: Probably a 40 gig for the OS drive and a 74 gig SCSI for the apps / database, files, etc... Cooling: I have a pretty big heater core and plan to make a northbridge block and custom air ducts. pHaestus says he has some stuff for me so we'll see Case: I might reuse my SuperMicro tower (case my current old ass server is in) or use the spare Lian Li I have here. I'll try to get some pics up as soon as I can. And don't worry, this isn't another of my long term projects :p Should be done in a month or less. |
Re: Ben's new server (Project)
RAM arrived today :) Board sometime next week.

Well I got the case all apart and think I might put the first heater core in front. I may use a second one if it makes a difference in CPU temps.

Re: Ben's new server (Project)
Hey ben a few questions to ponder for ya
1) What are you serving? For my music/movies/files fileserver I go with cheapo big capacity ide drives and I always have. When I hear one start to get noisy or when they get full then I just take the oldest and smallest one out and upgrade with the biggest one in my price point. Basically I feed my file server box $100 a year, which worked out to 60gb many years ago and is close to 500gb now. Also I'd wonder if the 74gb scsi is actually all that much faster than a new gen drive... 2) Is 4x256mb memory good with dual cpus on that board? It's been so long since I messed with Athlon XPs I honestly don't recall whether there'd be a big benefit to going to 2gb ram instead? 3) I think I have some junk er I mean quality vintage watercooling for you to finish it off with... |

2) It should be all the ram I need. My last server only had 256 MB and the one before that had 512 MB. Also keep in mind back when this board was made, 512 MB was considered a lot of ram ;) 3) Yep, I need em quick. Hope I get some work done this weekend. |

Well the last piece besides the cooling got here today: The motherboard.
Look at the size of that bastard! http://forums.procooling.com/vbb/att...3&d=1209063142 Good thing I decided to change cases. Lets just hope these XP chips work. If not I have a duron here to start off with. One thing I found funny was this board has the 24 pin power AND the 8 pin CPU connector :hammer: Think I'd be all set buying a cheap new PSU with the 24 & 8 pin connectors? |
Re: Ben's new server (Project)
If your server isn't mission critical you'd be ok with a cheapo 400w. Fortunately the 350-500w PSU market is pretty saturated so you could get a decent PSU for only a few more $ over a super cheapo.
I nearly bought a dual PIII server board from a used computer store a few weeks back, it was $15. But I just couldn't justify it, the server was only going to be a file server, and possibly a mythTV backend. I still haven't built my file server yet, I want to have a really low power server. Was thinking about using a recently rolled down Asus A8N SLI-Prem board with 3200+ processor. Not going to wc until I've done so on my P4 poop. |
Re: Ben's new server (Project)
oh dang I just noticed the 64bit PCI slots, you gonna be running any hw raid?
I was going to go with the A8N SLI-Prem board since it has 2 sata controllers for a total of 8 sata HDs. Its not truly a hw raid but if its only going to be a file server it doesn't matter to me anyway... I just need a couple identical HDs or I guess I could go VLM since it'll be linux anyway. If only I had money to actually do the projects I want to.... >_> |

This is the card I had in mind: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16816104007 But for a while I'll just be using PATA disks. The good news is I got the blocks from pH and I think I've found a nice cheap PSU in the OverClockers Classifieds forum. |
Re: Ben's new server (Project)
I sold something today and have a bit of money to spare. I might just go with a single dual core CPU and cheap mobo but I'll still water cool it. Guess I'll see how these parts work and then I'll decide.

Re: Ben's new server (Project)
What OS are you going to use? I will be going with Linux (ubuntu) once I have another HD to move my files onto - my current HDs are NTFS...

Re: Ben's new server (Project)
sure you didnt typo on that raid 0? for a fileserver?
might as well do a 4 x 500gb raid 10 setup for 1 usable terrabyte |
Re: Ben's new server (Project)
Nah, I'm just doing RAID0. I have some removable drives to backup to. I picked up two cheap 250 GB drives I'll use for a while till I get more money. Also I changed a lot of the hardware. updates soon :)

Re: Ben's new server (Project)
to keep your mojo flowing.... would love to see one of these up and running again....

Re: Ben's new server (Project)
#Rotor :) Man... I just shipped off my K7 to a guy on OverClockers forums :( Had I seen that pic sooner I might have kept it. I will be building a dual MP system for fun some day but ATM I don't have enough time and I just bought a quad core and a modern board for the server.

I remember when I wanted that board....that board....that board.....~~~@~@~@

Re: Ben's new server (Project)
The sad thing is that $90 will buy you a motherboard that will hold a $90 CPU outperforms that K7 mobo by a lot. Computers is a bad field for those who succumb to nostalgia (unfortunately for me).

Re: Ben's new server (Project)
Well I made a server outside of this log while I was selling off my K7 parts... Got back about what I paid I think :)
New server specs: X3210 Quad Xeon, 2 GB RAM, 2x 250GB SATA in RAID 0 (thread & pics to come) But last night I was on ebay and won something for $50... http://24.128.17.155/ben/ebaytyan.png This board takes a NORMAL PSU and all I need is a case, drives, PSU and better cooling and I'm good to go! K7 live on!! |

Re: Ben's new server (Project)
So with some simple pin mods my wimpy 2200s are now awesome 2600s!!

Water soon to come... And if anyone was wondering, here is the mod I did and the wire I used: http://333networks.homelinux.com/ben/tyanmp/pinmod.gif http://333networks.homelinux.com/ben...p/IMG_1010.jpg More to come... |
