I just think its ironic that the 4100 snap servers come with Maxtor drives by default. I was always under the impression that WD drives were more stable.

my local snap guys tell me that the Maxtor Diamondmax 9 drives used in snaps especially during the the late "4100M" period are one of the most reliable they have seen in 30 years of HDD's.

Maxtor Diamondmax 9 drives went from about 80 GB to 160 GB (I have seen them in 100gb 120gb versions also)

Likewise the Quantum fireball drives in every size from 10, 20 30,40, 60 & 80GB seem to also never die...these were more from the earlier times up to the mid "4100M" period, I have a box of them mainly 10-40GB units that I cannot bring my self to throw out, I use the smaller ones in firewalls mainly...

Many may scoff at these two statements but back then WD's didn't have the best name...

I remember as a young bloke lining up to part with about $380 AUD for a 1.2GB Quantum fireball drove but they had run out... So the guy offered me a Seagate that was much cheaper but another customer behind me started making crashing noises as soon as he heard the word Seagate and said "don't do it mate, don't do it!"

Point is that all drive makers have there ins and outs at certain times and even the best can deliver a crappy batch no matter how good their drives or how popular they are.
