Snap 14000

I recently acquired a used 14000 that's functional (web console works) and it's running OS 2.6 with 12 120GB drives. Ideally I'd like to replace all the drives (2 are failed) with larger capacity (what's the max it will recognize?) and use this with Mac OS X 10.5 clients.

What sorta things do I need to do for this to work reliably.

You will need to upgrade your OS to support OSX. The Guardian OS supports 23T, so the OS is not an issue. I have not worked on any 14000 units. But the upgrade process should be the same as the lower units, 4500. You will need to delete all Arrays, stop services like AV, PowerVault BU. The reboot to make sure all of the services have been cleared. I would remove all HD except the first drive. Install a new HD in the second slot and cold boot. The OS should tranfer over. After 10 min power down and move the new HD to slot 1 and confirm the unit will boot. If so you can hot swap the remaing HD's. As capacity, 500gig is probably the max for EIDE. I would use good HD's like WD Interprise HD's. I have not faith in Maxtor's, there an accident waiting to happen.

Is it possible to directly upgrade from 2.6 to whatever is current? Are there specific versions to stay away from?

I know they change the basic partition sizes. But upgrade is possiable if you purge all of the log files.

Anyone else here have a 14000 unit? They seem to be fairly rare, most of the docs don't mention it. What would be it's closest equivalent, the 18000? 4500?
