Snap Server 4500 CPU...
 

I have a 4500 with a dead CPU currently its a 2.4ghz 533fsb, I have a 3.2ghz 533fsb, but system will not boot with 3.2, are there any dip settings or will this just not see a 3.2...or any manuals for this Mainboard? I do see a set of 4 dipswitches near cpu with all off...

A BIOS must have the codes for a given CPU.

So then this bios will only see the 2.4ghz..?.... and cannot upgrade bios... and no settings on MOBO to set Multiplier.?... May be time to Upgrade my Server..:mad:

Sounds like the buss speed is off. But Phoenix has done a lot of upgrades to these units, he's more knowledgeable than I.

the buss speed on both cpu's are 533.. the only issue i could see is the Multiplier... I do have access to another 2.4 but just can't keep it..

Can the BIOS be upgraded on the 4500? , I'll get it booting again and find out the bios ver im at... and where can i get bios updates for the 4500??

ok here is what i have...

Bios ver.. 07.00.00
Build date.. 9/22/05
Bios ID .. S18Q3B02

With 3.2ghz cpu installed system powers up but it will not post.....

I just cracked my first beer for the night... so time to ponder this one...("A BIOS must have the codes for a given CPU. ")

I also tried a 2.8ghz P4 and got ame problems... looks to me like i need to do a Bios flash..(IF it is available.,..and finding it.).

If anyone has a resource for the S18Q-AMI BIOS.. please shoot me a message..

Okay, now that we have gone this far, I will jump in here. First and foremost, I have to ask, how do you know your 2.4Ghz CPU is dead? Second, how did it get that way?

Next. DIP switches to set multipliers and/or FSB speed? Are you kidding me? Modern motherboards have done this in firmware for a very long time now. Which brings us to the microcodes for a given CPU in BIOS.

Next. The BIOS updates for the GOS Snap Servers is built into the GOS gsu files. Since the Snap Servers were not designed to have people inside the units upgrading the CPU, there are no manual settings for CPU speeds in BIOS and I doubt CPU microcodes was high on the OEM's list of things to do in the BIOS updates.

Next. The 4200/4500/15000 used a number of different processors and therefore do recognize a number of different CPUs.

There is more information on each of those above, but I am always reluctant to pass along some of those details for the reasons of what I do on the side and more importantly what people do with the information. Sorry, but true.


Now armed with some information and questions, let's get to it.

I asked about the CPU because to my logical troubleshooting techniques, there may be more at play here. You have a 4500 with a 2.4Ghz CPU and then the CPU goes bad? Something most likely happened to cause this in my mind. Did the board go bad and cause it or vice versa? All kinds of things come to mind. How did we determine the CPU was bad and also know nothing else is bad?

Do you know the 2.8Ghz and 3.2Ghz processors you were using are good?

Are these processors you are using for laptop/mobile? Just checking since many of the laptop processors in this series of Pentium 4 looked the same. Mobile Pentium 4 will not work in the Snap 4200/4500/15000.

I have not used any Prescott processors (I don't like them, so I don't have them), nor tested a Northwood 3.2Ghz. But... I have used a Northwood 2.6Ghz, 2.8Ghz, and 3Ghz. Worked fine.

Obviously, in this situation, we need more information to be able to help you. Like what happened to the original CPU and what EXACT CPU you are trying to use.

Well to start off, my Dumb...@zz brother messed up the orig. cpu.. he pulled it out to test a MoBo and powered it up without a heatsink..

Next - the 3.2Ghz I have IS a Mobile P4 so that answers that...
The 2.8Ghz i have is a Celeron.. not sure about this one..
I borrowed another 2.4Ghz P4 to test the 4500 and it did work..So 4500 is good.

Do'nt the Norwood P4 have a 800Mhz FSB?

System is running Windows XP on it...So GOS is gone...-But im sure i can get it back if needed -

4500 sits in my media rack under my stairs..(I would just like to get it going again,,if i can use a faster CPU it would be nice but if i have to, i'll find another 2.4Ghz.)

Get yourself a:

Pentium 4, NOT Celron
2.8Ghz or 3.06Ghz
533Mhz FSB
NON MOBILE
512 cache (this is a Northwood non Celron)

To do this, go to Intel's sSpec Finder and select Pentium 4. Then after that, you select the Speed, 533 FSB, 512 cache, then filter on selections. This will list the sSpec number of the CPUs you want.

One more question Phoenix,

I have a choice of 6 CPU's in the 3.06Ghz range...
and 2 with the same D1 Stepping as the Old 2.4Ghz.
SL6PG and SL6QC, Cannot see a differance between these.

I can get a SL6PG for pretty cheap.
its a little harder to find the SL6QC for a reasonable price.

Has the SL6PG been tested or does it not matter at this point?

These are tray processors, but some are also offered as boxed processors with an unattached fan heatsink. These parts have multiple VIDs.

Go for the cheaper one, it is just a non Retail version.

As for which are tested, I have to tell you, I didn't write it down and don't remember anymore. I just know if you stick with the Pentium 4 Northwood bunch with the 533MHz FSB and 512K Cache, they work for every one I have used. Also, the 400MHz FSB bunch work most of the time also. The 800MHz FSB group won't at rated speeds (the board doesn't support 800MHz FSB). Speaking of which, the MB/BIOS does not use the hyperthread either.

Os can they only be "SL6PG" or "SL6QC"

If I message these sellers should they be able to locate the "SL6PG" or "SL6QC" easily from the print on the top of the chip? - or do I need to get all the numbers and compare them to a lit online?

That's one way to kill the noise of the blower. Are you still using the smaller fans for the HD's? or did you liquid cool them too.

I left the HD fans in but changed them out to a more quiet one.
I would like to Liquid cool the GPU chip but do'nt want to damage it trying to remove the heat sink..looks like it is glued on.
