Snap 1100, What'll it do?

Got a snap 1100, it works but I got flash drives bigger than it! How much disk will it do these days with any of the "improved" OS's and couldn't find if anyone has had any luck with SATA adapters (the 1100 uses PATA drive) It would be kinda cool to drop my WD 2tB drive in this dude with a SATA to PATA adapter and stick it on my LAN somewhere!

ClefCruiser,

You are limited via the Snap operating system to 1-1.2TB. Nobody has been able to install any other OS other then what the mfg uses for this model to my knowledge. SATA adapters do and will work, however, the limit is the operating system.

Read the FAQ's (sticky, link in my sig) It will answer most of your questions..

The SnapOS does not support Vista up.

Re: Snap 1100, What'll it do?

I did lurk around a few different days, and did read/print the best of the FAQs, seems getting a newer OS (not sure what mine has yet) is a little hard to come up with ;-) but I'm sure when I figure our what I'm doing that'll work out, and I did notice in the List Of Snap Server Hard Drive Upgrades that "zOner" has a 1tB on his, now I do understand the "LBA" limitation at 137mB working with my TiVo units, and I figured that would come into play (possibly) with the snap, but am unfamiliar with a 1-1.2tB limitation, is that an OS or HW limitation? and are there any UDMA interface issues with the HW? Surely they've gotten past PIO access! as you can tell, I maybe green with the snaps but I've turned a hard disk platter or two! If it's possible, I'd like to try to put my Western Digital WD20EADS on a PATA to SATA adapter in my snap 1100 if anyone has some insights on this project! Unless it is a definate no can do kind of thing!

Re: Snap 1100, What'll it do?

The limiting factor on total capacity is the use of a 12bit system Snap used.
Clink on the SnapAppliance Icon on the admin page will give you firmware and OS versions. Overland has released the SnapOS to the general public now, latest is v4.0.860.

Some users have installed SATA with the use of converters. The biggest issue is space.

Re: Snap 1100, What'll it do?

So what seems to be the best 1.2tB drive that has been used, if known, I found a SATA/PATA adapter that's pretty compact that and I should be able to horn in the unit behind a drive, though I am toying with an idea that involves the use of a pair of laptop (2.5") drives. I may throw a 1.2tB (if found) in the unit and when the 2.5" notebook drives in the 1tB size become available (and affordable) I may try putting a pair in the 1100, that would make a pretty compact little NAS.

On another note, has anyone seen the new NAS server device IOMega is touting about, apparently, they advertise, you can plug in USB (anything) into it and it serves those drive(s) NAS, flash or disk apparently, has multiple USB ports...

Hi,
Manged to upgrade my SNAPOS to 4.0.860 (US)
Follwed the instructions to make and burn image to new disk (80GB) which is beter then the 20GB but still not much use.

I have an ST31000528AS 1TB SATA drive and NEXIN SATA to IDE converter but the SATA drive wont boot. I just get both lights flashing. Is there any tricks to prep the SATA drive? PATA drives are becoming hard to find most suppliers max out at 160GB and I stoped buying PATA in 2003 so my stocks are nill.

Cheers

Model Software Hardware Server # BIOS

Sounds like you did not get the os transfered to the new HD correctly.

Re: Snap 1100, What'll it do?

Yes i figured that - The modern computer I was using doesnt have an IDE interface and the old computers that do didnt seem to work with the SATA drive adapter to well.
Has anyone used a SATA interface to put the OS down on the drive? If so what seetings for the SATA controle (IDE emulation, ACHI, RAID) - I tried the first two with no luck.
has anyone tried using this type of drive or adapter?

Re: Snap 1100, What'll it do?

You should use IDE emulate.
