SnapServer 410, AD Domain Join Fails
Hi,
I know I am "asking for it" by submitting this post (based on previous bashings I have read here), but for some reason I have only found pertinent discussions on ProCooling thus far, so here goes... I am trying to join this SnapServer 410 to an AD domain, and have a very specific problem, so hoping some folks with a lot of expertise can suggest some things I could try. (CHALLENGE!) I try to join an AD domian and get "The administrator name and/or password are incorrect" Keep in mind, "Large company, so complex structure + limited control" Details: I need to join one child domain, using permissions from a different child domain (same parent), and I don't think the server can understand it. So server needs to be joined to "server.parent.com" domain (under a 3 deep OU) My account (which does have permissions for the OU in "server") is in the child domain "admins.parent.com". There is a trust in place, and all permissions are correct. In fact I successfully created a computer account manually, (in the correct OU) using AD U&C. I THINK the problem is that the snap server is looking for my account in "server.parent.com". I tried adding the WINS and DNS versions to the Administrator Name dialog of the snap server, but it doesn't like it (same error). Meaning, I tried ADMIN\myusername and myusername@admins.parent.com. One thing I tried which results in a different error, is join the wrong domain (try to add computer account to "Admins" domain. Since the request and admin account are in the same domain, it instead gives the error "Domain Join Failed". I assume here, that it fails because I do not have permission to create any computer accounts in admins.parent.com. I have tried changing various other options, which all result in a different (in my opinion "less successful") errors. Anyone want to take a shot at how I tell the Server to look to a different domain for Administrator Name? Much thanks, even just for trying. Yes I agree Guardian OS is probably a lot better. OS Version is 5.0.133 SP1 |

Geeez dude, nice way to start your introduction to the forum, by pretty much insulting the very people who might be able to help you. For the record, I have been here a very long time, and the only bashings I have seen here are; 1) People who insist on presenting "a theory", and often based on pretty much of nothing, as "a fact" and don't like being corrected, and 2) The people trying to do the correcting. Now on to your presented question. I am a hardware guy, not a software/IT guy, and your knowledge on this subject appears to far exceed my own. Thus, I do not think I can help here beyond a potential small idea and my answer should be taken in that light. I do know there have been some minor (undocumented and documented) fixes to GOS 5.x since it was released to correct some errors/bugs in active directory stuffs and for the changes from 2K03 to 2K08 etc. I might suggest here that you first upgrade your GOS to the newest 5.2.067 and see if that corrects your issue. Just an idea, best I got on this one. |
Re: SnapServer 410, AD Domain Join Fails
My thanks for your suggestion, when I first started this effort it had begun with OS update (I am pretty sure to the most current at the time). I will definitely look for and install the latest updates.
I also want to offer my apologies to any / all who took my initial comment as an insult. I definitely did not intend it that way, it was supposed to be coming from a humble perspective, as I am using the low-end Snap server with snap server OS (and not the superior GuardianOS / 4xxx series server). My apology is sincere, and thanks Phoenix32 for pointing out my mis-step. |

Hibs2, Phoenix does not his limits, very very good when it comes to hardware. I saw you post earlier and did not respond because I know NOTHING about AD. Just keep checking back there are some that come through here that are knowledgeable on AD.

Re: SnapServer 410, AD Domain Join Fails
So when I connect to my SnapServer (web), and click on the "Support" link at the top of the page, it takes me to overland.com.
When I check the downloads for GuardianOS, tha latest is "GuardianOS 5.2.056 Service Patch 1". I saw some discussion regarding downloads from Adaptec (I think), so do both vendors sell these? I also think Adaptec requires a valid login + Maintenance contract. Regardless, any know if it is OK to install firmware from anywhere else? Can these updates be dowloaded from anywhere besides Adaptec? Thanks, Hibs2 |
Re: SnapServer 410, AD Domain Join Fails
Overland is the Only supplier for these OS's. The GOS will require a maintenance contract to get it, ($$$). The SnapOS will not install on your 410.

Re: SnapServer 410, AD Domain Join Fails
Short version:
Adaptec bought Snap Appliance Overland bought out the Snap Servers from Adaptec Overland Storage now owns, sells, and supports The Snap Servers. And yes, to download the GOS files requires "entitlement", i.e. a contract with them. |
Re: SnapServer 410, AD Domain Join Fails
Could someone please send me a link to where overland.com keeps the downloads?
I do have a login, and wanted to try accessing it. I only ask because downloads from this site seem odd. When I traverse this link (http://support.overlandstorage.com/s...server-nas.htm) I only see "GuardianOS 5.2.056 Service Patch 1" as the latest download. If they do have more recent versions, or patches, they must be in a different place? Why two download locaitons? Why protect minor updates with maintenance agreements, but not 5.2.056? Wierd. Thanks everyone for your responses. |
