Anyone know who makes this?

Damn I want one of those. My DVD drive at school doesn't seem to be working up to par and i've always considered grabbing a firewire card and firewire CDRW for the system, but this is much better! (keep in mind the Chilli Pro only has one 5.25" drive bay)

iceheart 12-22-2001 09:23 AM

It doesn't seem to work.

Kevin 12-22-2001 12:08 PM

I just emailed the guys at OC workbench. Maybe'll they'll get back to me and tell me what's up with that drive.

Kevin 12-22-2001 02:12 PM

Thx Webmasta33. That drive looks tight!

WebMasta33 12-23-2001 01:25 AM

Ok... I emailed him, and this was his responce, quoted entirly...

"dual drive. a dvd-rom + CD-RW in one. available in Jpana
made by matsuhshita"

Hm.... Well, I like the idea, but that's a little far to swim for me.

Kevin 12-23-2001 02:08 AM

Matsushita usually means Panasonic if it ever gets released in the USA.

Akiba had some stuff on it too, can't find the link now.

everyone was actually talking about it for use in the shuttle sv24, Kev and numerous others think of the Chilli Pro of course.

Apple has some killer combo drives in their laptops...but you wouldn't care because you all are pc people :D

Brad 12-31-2001 04:08 PM

also the fact they are only a single drive, while this one has two seperate drives.

btw beav, Dell have had combo drives for at least 9 months now in their laptops.

beav 12-31-2001 04:12 PM

delll...pssssh!
:)
dell is weak soss...the pb g4 is the ultimate laptop...and you know it.

Brad 12-31-2001 04:20 PM

apart from the fact it is ugly, slow, and is an apple

iceheart 12-31-2001 08:38 PM

ahahah the only thing "ultimate" about macs are 2 things and they both have 4 letters and start with an S...

Jonas 12-31-2001 09:10 PM

email me, and i may be able to get ya one from japan. i still have a ton of boyz over there, and i am sure they could make a trip to akihabara if i asked nicely ;)

Brad 01-01-2002 01:03 AM

Ya know my family bought an iMac a while back, and while the thing is slow as hell, I do like OS X. The new PB Ti Books are very speedy, and the screens are BEAUTIFUL. Add to the fact that they look fuggin awesome and are ultra thin and you have a winner. If I ever buy a laptop, it will be that one.

Not quite the same but...

Have you considerd a combo drive such as the Ricoh MP9120?? DVD and CR/RW in one 5 1/4 bay. You can't do on-the-fly disk to disk like you could with the dual drive, but a combo may be more available.

Brad 01-01-2002 04:46 PM

I know that Kev would prefer to have two seperate drives. Which seems to leave this drive only in the equation.

Unless kev....you could buy 2x laptop drives, mount them together, make a faceplate, and buy 2x laptop ide to normal ide converters.

Kev, the pbg4 isn't that fast when you are playing games...

Kevin 01-01-2002 06:02 PM

yah what brad said... 2 drives would be great. And i'm just always loving the new innovations. I'm just curious about that and if it can run as two drives at one time, if it has two IDE connections in the back, etc...

and yah brad I know the Apple TiBooks aren't and fast as the new dells or anything, but to me the looks and screen outweigh the speed loss. Plus I like playing w/ new things like OS X.

Brad 01-01-2002 06:17 PM

it does have two connectors, it is two completely seperate drives, I saw the pics on akiba.

To me, I'd prefer a dell 15" at 1600x1200 being powered by a Radeon 7500 with 64mb than I would a 15.2" at 1152 x 768 being powered by generic Radeon with 16mb. The looks are nice, so is the weight, but it doesn't worry me enough to consider the PB G4 seriously.
