OverClocking Athlon 750 Slot A
Just thought I would post a note about my attempt at OverClocking. Maybe get some FREE advice from you all....
I have a ASUS K7M mainboard with Samsung 256 PC100 RAM ATI Rage Fury Video 32 megs ATA66 Fijistu ( spelled wrong ? is it ?? ) HD Athlon 750 CPU and a FREESPEED GFD. I installed GFD and was able to get it to run stable at 850 with vcore at 1.7 .. I left my BIOS at FSB 100mhz and vcore at default because the GFD will handle this.. All attempts at 900mhz were useless.. I upped the vcore to 1.85 and no show.. Probably due to L2 cache, I dont know.. Just didnt happen... Well, I then went into BIOS and upped the FSB to 105 and raised the stable vcore to 1.75 and left the GFD at 850... Well I then saw 892 mhz... Thats OK.. But I would like to see more... Any thoughts would be appreciated ------------------ Perkster http://www.vanislenet.net |
I used to have that exact setup, Athlon 750 on a K7M, what I had to do to get the chip up over 850 was move 2 SMD resistors on the chip to change the cache divider. It's very very difficult to do (especially for me because I'd never done it before and I had no magnifying glass at the time). On a 750 the divider is normally 2/5, change it to 1/3 and you'll be able to go faster. My 750 topped out at about 950, I was able to get it to 966 semi stable, but couldn't pull off 1000.. There's also a voltage hack for the K7M that will get the voltage much higher, which would have done the trick for that CPU, but I found that just as I was ready to move on. I'm sorry I don't have URL's to help ya out, just been too long since that era. I'd say use Google and do some searching. http://www.procooling.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yes I too would have differculties in soldiering up resistors.. My reason ==> ( Chicken .hit! )
As I configuring this thing right now, I had a blue screen in Win 2000 when playing around with Prime95 and so on.. So I have since upped Voltage to vcore 1.8.... Found I get this screen usually because cpu not getting enough vcore... So as it stands right now I have the Freespeed GFD config at 850 and vcore at 1.8 with my bios FSB at 105mhz giving me a total of 892... Going to run Prime95 to see if heats up a bit more and take it from there... I have seen on web where I could get L2 cache multi to 1/3 with the soldiering... Might have to bring someone in to do that.. Would like to see 950 like you.... http://www.procooling.com/ubb/smile.gif I will keep ya posted... As I continue to experiment with OverClocking... ------------------ Perkster http://www.vanislenet.net |
Hey Perkster!
I've OC'd five Athlon Slot-A processors using the soldering method and my experience clearly tells me as UnaClocker mentioned that you have to change the cache divider to a lower value, in your case 1/3. 0.25um processors:
The first 500 core @ 700 cpu is actually the fastest all around because of the faster L2 cache unless the computations are not dependendent upon L2 cache speed. 0.18um

I still have my cache divider on 1/2... running 896MHz now. It'll boot @ 950 1/2 but my cooler (some Titan dual-fan shitty thing) isn't capable of keeping it on a safe temperature, so windows crashes :). 900MHz isfine, but I likethe 112MHz FSB (8x112) rather than the 100MHz (9x100). It improves framerates and such greatly :).
System specs: AMD K75-700 week 24 @ 896MHz Asus K7V-T @ 112MHz Innovatek TD2 (GFD) @ 8 Infineon 256MB pc133 2-2-2 @149 1/3 MHz Works greatwhenthe case is open :). TGEN |
I have a Slot A Classic 850 @ 950 with a GFD. I hard moddedthe cache divider to 1/3. The voltage is at 1.85v. It has an 850 core. I also have a 700 with an 800 core. I did a complete "hard mod" on it and did away with the GFD. It is at 1000MHz with the cache set at 1/3 also. The voltage is set on the Epox 7KXA mobo at 1.85v. Later I will hard mod the voltage on the Athlon. It all depends how the SiSoft Sandra burn in goes. I found the "Hard mod" help at Tomshardware.com. Good luck with yours. :)
