XP1700 Overclocking Results?
Hello all, it has been a while since I posted, but I hope you all will accept me back.
I am wondering about anyone's experience with overclocking and XP and a KR7A. Here is what I have: XP1700 (not unlocked yet :() Alpha 8045 HSF (with a Delta 40CFM Fan) Abit KR7A-Raid 256MB Kingmax PC2700 DDR Visiontek GF3 @ 233/533 Game Theater XP Adaptec 29160N Netgear FA310TX Now I haven't spent the time yet to unlock it, I have just spent time playing with the FSB. So far I have it up to 145Mhz FSB (11x145) with the memory pushed as far as the bios can go. So I am getting it from 1466 to ~1600, what the XP1900 is actually clocked at. * Would it be worth it to back off on the memory timings and go for a higher FSB? Here is my 3dmark 2001 url if you guys like that stuff: score 8410 http://gamershq.madonion.com/compare2k1.shtml?2421057 I cannot remember what the stepping is I think I have it written down at home. Any suggestions/comments? |
back off the memory, and see how high you can hit. most XP's are doing their pr rating in mhz, ie your's should do 1700mhz, with a bit of cooling, and voltage.
That would take you to 155mhz fsb, which isn't uncommon at all. You may consider raising your Vdimm and Vio too, that will help with the additional speed of the ram, and other devices |
I found out it is a AKGKA - Y stepping chip if that means anyhting to anyone.
|
Y's are typically a bit better. I'd say you have a resonable chance hitting 1700mhz
|
I have almost the exact same setup, same chip, same board,
OCZ PC-3000 memory, older adaptec. I can hit 150Mhz FSB without unlocking it. That's with an un-modded board, not yet unlocked processor, and some water-cooling. From experience I know you will get better scores and FPS and sometimes even better stability by dropping your multiplier and going with a higher FSB. The bandwith gained with higher FSB is far more advantagous then the bragging rights of the higher overall Mhz. My system is dissasembled right now while I paint and mod the case (A YY Cube I got second hand from someone who chickened out on case modding it), But I'll get back to you as to how well it does after I unlock the processor, and how far it goes after a voltage mod. Also; for me too it has been a while since I've done any OCing and posting results on the board....could someome tell me how I can find out my stepping? And how to read the weeks on these XP processors? It looks different from the old Blue Meanies I used to run "back in the day" LOL. |
anyway, just try lowering the memory, it might just help you a bit, and you can always change it back.
for finding out the week, it is still on there, in the same line, and same format |
You really should try unlocking the chip; you'll get more headroom by being able to lower the multiplier that way...
I'm using Kingmax PC-150 ram in my Epox 8KTA3 Pro motherboard, currently running at 12.5X145 FSB, 1812.5 MHz. It's an XP 1700+ AGOGA, 0152, Y chip. Damn nice stepping, the AGOGA's... works at 1.8v, too. Actually, it works BETTER at lower voltages than high; it would not clear 1725 MHz at 1.95 vcore... My Kingmax won't run reliably over 152 MHz, but I'm getting good benchmarks at 145 MHz. So, I'm keeping it at 12.5X145 for now. |
dabhpr, lowering the voltage and getting a higher overclock normally means that your temps are too high. My friend has found that if his XP goes about 40C he sets the voltage to 1.95v to get the highest overclock, the colder it is the more voltage and the higher overclock he can get

With most steppings, that has been true. It certainly was true of my old XP 1600+, an AGKGA 0134 Y model.
But with the AGOGA stepping, it just doesn't apply. |
I bout an XP 1700+ this weekend, it's an AGOGA-9 core, is this core any good? i think i'm gonna get me the ThermalTake Volcano 7 or 7+, haven't decided yet... i'm using an MSI K7T266Pro-R with 256Mb of TwinMos pc2100 (does 164FSB no problem on my Thunderbird..only can't get any further because of the mainboard restrictions :( ).
howfar do you guys think i can get this baby? hopefully this weekend i'm going to get it unlocked, so it's not in my computer yet.. |
i have an xp1700 as well... i got it up to 1.6ghz without unlocking it... how well does unlocking work?
|
xp1700's must be popular this year
i was able to get mine up to 1.68ghz (10mhz higher than a XP 2000+) with an alpha pal8045 and a 68.1cfm delta fan (hella loud!) but i had to change out a few things and now im stuck with some POS cooler-master..... (idle 50C/load 56C) yes i know my temps are very very bad |
well 1700+'s must be popular but i am a poor bastard and i could only afford a 1600+ but i was able to do 155fsb on the STOCK HSF!!! :-) but my MSI board is said to not be really stable higher than that in many reviews,, so i'm going to upgrade to a 2000+ and an Epox mobo.

I got an AXP 1700+ watercooled. I'm quite satisfied with it. Regular overclocking with HSF thermaltake volcano 7 (quiet kind with auto speed) got me to 1700+. Watercooled got me 1850 rock stable. Just bought a peltier and maze3-1 from Jason. I'll update u guys once i get it all working. But I wasnt able to get that much more with 156w pelt. THe new pelt is 226w.
